This is a gently self-deprecating, ironic and often warmly, sadly humorous tale by Roswell Field of a widower's last shot at happiness in love... It is narrated in the first person, that being John, a well to do and preserved (according to himself) reasonably well-preserved middle-aged widower. John falls for a much younger person - a person, while delightful, not entirely unproblematic: she is the orphaned daughter of his very first love.

A wonderfully warm and atmospheric tale by Irving Bacheller of friendship, wisdom, growing up, war and love. The friendship is between the old man Eben, who rescues young orphan Bill from yet another orphanage, as the two migrate from Vermont to Paradise Valley. The wisdom comes from Eben. The growing-up is done by Bill, as well as the partaking in the war (the American Civil War) and the falling in love (the lady's name is Hope).

Temptress Desirée Le Mire and brothers Paul and Harry Lamar are searching for a lost treasure in a mysterious cave in the Andes. They encounter Incas deformed by living underground. What ensues is a tornado of an adventure underground by Rex Stout, featuring heroic acts, lucky escapes, battles of will and physical power, feats of daring and strategy; as the heroic trio tangles with the Incas (of which the chief has taken a fancy to the beautiful Desirée).

As mostly science fiction writer Edgar Pangborn switches to the detective genre; we get this successful and suspenseful novel of a murder case against our female protagonist Callista Blake... Meticulously detailed, the story flashes back and forth in time, framed in the classical style of the "courtroom drama" we have come to know so well by now.

What's that old saying? Never trust a beautiful woman... perhaps, perhaps not. This is an effective mystery and detective yarn by James Hay that will please fans of the classic genre. A typical set up in the classical Agatha Christie style; a detective visiting a mansion is suddenly forced to investigate the murder of a young woman on the premises and everyone there - including himself - might be up for grabs as potential killer; as alibis start to crumble and lies and silences abound...

This piece by Robert F. Young is all about the fascinating topic of time travel and the possibility of there being many copies of oneself in doing the traveling! The present year is 2178 and time travel has been illegalized. One highly skilled time traveler, Tom Mallory, decides to steal the Holy Grail, so as to be able to see out the rest of his days in prosperity. Of course, things will prove to be not so easy.

From now on everything gets really complicated, as the new Rochester falls in love with the old/real Rochester's woman... A very funny work but also a very astute social satire.

Welcome to the incredible world of Ambrose Bierce! A true master of the weird, eccentric, macabre and even grotesque horror story. The 24 tales in this collection are no exception. They are often deceptively simple, in the end requiring the listener to re-evaluate what has transpired and realizing that the pieces of the puzzle - often quite dreamlike - makes for something bigger and more sinister than just the finished work.

Our hero, a Royal Canadian Police Officer stumbles upon mystery, love and adventure during his chase after a giant madman and killer, moving across the snowy wilderness with wolves for sled dogs! This is for pure and unadulterated lovers of rugged action and adventure, with a nice side order of romance.

The listener comes up against constant dead-ends during the tale's unfolding, right up to the surprising and satisfying resolution.

A scary story of spiritual reincarnation and transference by Robert Smythe Hichens that grabs the listener from the start and never lets go. The first person narrator writes down his story as if to desperately try to convince both the listener and himself that he is not going crazy. This plays out very much in the style of psychological horror master Edgar Alan Poe: a sinister atmosphere, a character in distress, scary and inexplicable things happening.

This suspenseful and adventurous story by Stewart Edward White is set in North Canada. It centers around the "long journey", which is an euphemism for an implied order to kill a person who has become a liability to the company; in practice, this meant sending out the offender alone and with almost no provisions on a long trek in the wilderness, to face almost certain death. But the Hudson Bay Trading Company did not count on young and handsome offender Ned Trent to be so resourceful and resilient!

This story by James Oliver Curwood, published in 1913, possesses all of the great elements that make up a good adventure yarn! Old fashioned sense of nobility, falling in love, losing love, suspense, tragedies and ultimate happiness regained as the listener gets entangled in the story - full of twists and turns - of a Sergeant of the Canadian Northwest Mounted and his partner; chasing an elusive killer and his wife through a wintry and harsh world.

A gloriously touching romance by Captain Charles de Créspigny, with a nicely nuanced and observed central character that grows to a noble soul. This character, a soldier of WWI; wakes up from injury only to gradually discover through his damaged memory (partly) that his day-bride has remarried (believing him to be dead)... The soldier decides to re-invent himself and his life completely from scratch - this proves to be a tall order indeed.

A nautical mystery by Francis Marion Crawford unfolds for the listener, raising more puzzling questions than immediate answers: a boat crew find themselves minus one crew member (supposedly a twin brother) after a storm. But was it really the twin brother that went overboard? In that case, why is his presence felt so strongly? What actually happened during the fateful night? Who is it that is actually missing?

A story of ultimate redemption and finding of love for our "hero", the alcoholic gambler and Yukon gold finder Carter Brent. He strikes real gold as he comes upon a beautiful young half-breed girl called Snowdrift. The two experience adventures and adversity of all sorts, both physical and psychological.
