Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers.

The Manipulator. I can manipulate the emotions of anyone who lets me. I will make you hurt, make you cry, make you laugh and sigh. But my words don't affect him. Especially not when I plead for him to leave. He's always there, watching and waiting. And I can never look away. Not when I want him to come closer. The Shadow. I didn't mean to fall in love. But now that I have, I can't stay away. I'm mesmerized by her smile, by her eyes, and the way she moves. I'll keep watching and waiting. Until I can make her mine. And once she is, I'll never let her go.

The stories were all wrong—Hook was never the villain. For two centuries, all of the Darling women have disappeared on their 18th birthday. Sometimes they’re gone for only a day, some a week or a month. But they always return broken. Now, on the afternoon of my 18th birthday, my mother is running around the house making sure all the windows are barred and the doors locked. But it’s pointless. Because when night falls, he comes for me. And this time, the Never King and the Lost Boys aren’t willing to let me go.

Triple Falls wasn’t at all what it seemed, nor were the men that swept me under their wing. But in order to keep them, I had to be in on their secrets. Secrets that cost us everything to keep. That’s the novelty of fiction versus reality. You can’t re-live your own love story, because by the time you’ve realized you’re living it, it’s over. At least that was the case for me and the men I trusted my foolish heart to. Looking back, I’m convinced I willed my story into existence, due to my illness, and all were punished.

Everything about my life is a lie. As a hidden twin princess, born second, I have only one purpose―to sacrifice my life for my sister if death comes for her. I’ve been living under the guise of a poor, obscure girl of no standing, slipping into the palace and into the role of the true princess when danger is present. Now the queen is dead and the ageless King Eidolon has sent my sister a gift―an eerily familiar gift―and a proposal to wed. I don’t trust him, so I do what I was born to do and secretly take her place on the eve of the coronation.

Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Publisher's summary
“The first year is when some of us lose our lives. The second year is when the rest of us lose our humanity.”―Xaden Riorson
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College―Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky.
Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.
Although Violet’s body might be weaker and frailer than everyone else’s, she still has her wits―and a will of iron. And leadership is forgetting the most important lesson Basgiath has taught her: Dragon riders make their own rules.
But a determination to survive won’t be enough this year.
Because Violet knows the real secret hidden for centuries at Basgiath War College―and nothing, not even dragon fire, may be enough to save them in the end.
The Empyrean series is best enjoyed in order.

Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College—Violet included. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is—unless she betrays the man she loves.

Love the book hate the narration
Great book, but this narrator is just not good. Teddy Hamilton is fantastic as always, but Rebecca Soler is just not right for audio. I listened to the last book, and thought she was just sick, but no it’s just her voice. The swallowing and breathing are just so off-putting, it’s kind of gross to listen to, even at 1.5x speed. She also starts to do voices for different characters, but they all tend to blend into one voice and it’s hard to tell who is who. I liked this story more than the first one though. It felt more complete and the amount of depth in the story was great.

Absolutely love this book!
This book is just as good as the first book and I’ve been waiting for it for months! It did not disappoint. I’m so glad it’s finally out! Also if you speed up 1.5x you don’t hear any breathing from the narrator! The narrator in my opinion is absolutely great and does a great job and I never noticed the breathing thing that I hear other people noticed. Ps I LOVE DRAGONS, this is the best dragon book!

GET IT GIRL
Somehow as great as, if not better than the first. Rebecca is an amazing writer. this book had me laughing out loud, sitting on the end of my seat and crying all in one sitting.
I personally love the narrator and hate when they switch it to the male perspective for the last chapter. I noticed a little bit of pausing to swallow and nasally speaking at certain points but it doesn't bother me, it seems like the narrator is just really into character or maybe has a cold at parts of it so she's trying to breathe hahah. one of the times I noticed it was during a highly emotional scene and It almost sounds like she is crying and holding back tears, like the character. (it's really not that bad, I just want to defend the narrator because she is amazing in my opinion.)
YAY FOR GREAT FANTASY NOVELS!!!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE
I absolutely loved listening to this book. BOTH narrators did a fantastic job, and please disregard any other reviews stating otherwise. ( I have 7+ months of listening time on audible, and in my opinion have a pretty good grasp on what is great narration vs not so great ) LISTEN to this book and use that credit! so worth it!
ALSO, I cried, I laughed, smiled, cried some more and just felt all the emotions with this one. I'm so unbelievably excited for the next book, and just so incredibly awed by the world this author created.

Barely paused start to finish
This story is absolutely amazing!! I barely paused it to work, sleep, shower. I'm happy how the story went, as there were a few parts I thought would be predictable, but the characters are mature and act mature which I appreciate. As for the narrator, I did find her voice a little off at first, but overall I did enjoy her narration. She does a good job. Best of 1.2x speed. Absolutely can't wait for the next one!
