Moni, the goat boy, was a very cheerful young man who loved his job and his flock with all his heart. When young Paula first encounter's Moni's jubilant nature and happy song, she is captivated by his joy and becomes his friend. Moni spends each day up in the mountains with the goats and has a particularly special attachment to a kid named Maggerli. One day, Moni runs into a boy from another village who has discovered a beautiful diamond cross and the boy tells Moni that if he keeps his secret about the gross, he will buy Maggerli for Moni to save her from death.

They become bosom friends but Heidi becomes ill and has to return home, but when her crippled friend comes to the Alps for a visit, well, we don't want to spoil the story for you.

Mit 8 Jahren wird sie nach Frankfurt, zu dem auf den Rollstuhl angewiesenen Mädchen Klara, zur Unterhaltung gebracht. Die beiden Mädchen freunden sich an. Doch das große Heimweh macht Heidi krank und sie wird zurück zu ihrem Großvater gebracht.

Als Heidi von ihrer Tante Dete bei ihrem Großvater abgegeben wird, glaubt sie, niemals mehr glücklich zu werden. Ihr Großvater liebt sie nicht, Dete lässt sie alleine und der freche Peter scheint sie nur ärgern zu wollen. Alles scheint verloren. Dann aber besinnt sich die kleine Heidi auf ihre Stärken: Ihre immer fröhliche Art und die Hoffnung, alles wird einmal gut.

Die kleine Heidi ist glücklich bei ihrem Großvater auf der Alm. Tagsüber tollt sie mit ihrem Freund, dem Geißenpeter, und seinen Ziegen über die Wiesen und abends klettert sie in ihr duftendes Heubett. Als Heidi von ihrer Tante nach Frankfurt gebracht wird, sind die unbeschwerten Tage vorüber. Als Gesellschafterin der kranken Klara soll Heidi in die besseren Kreise eingeführt werden. Doch sie plagt Heimweh nach der Alm.
