Der Name des Jünglings: Lysis. Bereitwillig folgt Sokrates dem Verliebten und macht in der Palästra die Bekanntschaft mit eben jenem Lysis, aber zudem auch mit dessen Freund und Kameraden Menexenos.

Epicteto vivió parte de su vida como esclavo en Roma. Sus enseñanzas se conservan en esta sucinta obra, transcrita por su discípulo Flavio Arriano alrededor del año 108 d. C. La filosofía de Epicteto es intensamente práctica. Dirige a sus alumnos a centrar la atención en sus opiniones, ansiedades, pasiones y deseos, para que “nunca dejen de obtener lo que desean ni caigan en lo que evitan”.
