A. W. Tozer was a man who knew the voice of God. He shared this experience with every true child of God. With all those who are called by the grace of God to share in the mystical union that is possible with Him through His son Jesus. Tozer fought against much dryness and formality in his day. Considered a mighty man of God by most Evangelicals today, he was unconventional in his approach to spirituality and had no qualms about consulting everyone from Catholic saints to German Protestant mystics for inspiration on how to experience God more fully.

The Epistle of Barnabas is often quoted by the ancient church fathers. Although not considered inspired Scripture it was used to combat legalism in the first two centuries AD. Along with explaining why the Laws of Moses are not binding on Christians, the Epistle explains how many of the Old Testament rituals teach typological prophecy. Subjects explored are: Yom Kippur, the Red Heifer ritual, animal sacrifices, circumcision, the Sabbath, Daniels visions and the end-time 10-nation empire, and the Temple.

There is this great difference between the works of men and the works of God, that the same minute and searching investigation, which displays the defects and imperfections of the one, brings out also the beauties of the other. If the most finely polished needle on which the art of man has been expended be subjected to a microscope, many inequalities, much roughness and clumsiness, will be seen. But if the microscope be brought to bear on the flowers of the field, no such result appears.

This oldest of the extant Apocryphal Gospels claims to have been written by James (the Just) in Jerusalem. It was first published in the Latin version of Postellus in 1552. It exists in numerous Greek mss., the best of which is said to be one of the 10th century. The Syriac versions are older, and, with occasional abbreviations, agree fairly with the Greek text, and with one another. The fragment translated by Dr. Wright is supposed to belong to the sixth century; the text on the palimpsest of Mrs. Lewis is referred to the fifth or sixth century.

Tozer was a modern-day prophet. His call to the church was unequivocal: We must put Christ at the center of our lives and live for him and through him alone. He was an iconoclast among evangelicals. One who sought to please God and not man. In this way, he made many friends and many enemies. But everything that drove him was for the betterment of the human race in general and the church in particular.

The church that lacks power first lacks obedience. Speaking of apathy toward obedience, A. W. Tozer says, "Until this is corrected, we can hope for very little power in our churches"...Obedience is what no revival, no reformation, and no Spirit-filled person has ever been without. It separates true faith from dead faith. It bears fruit and is followed by power. It is costly, but we cannot afford to withhold it.

This article first appeared in The Alliance Weekly in 1946 and was reprinted in 1954. It has also been printed in virtually every English-speaking country on earth, has been put into tract form by various publishers, and still crops up now and then in the religious press. Its message is still needed and it expresses Dr. Tozer’s philosophy of the Christian life. If only this one message were heeded by all our listeners Dr. Tozer’s ministry would have been most profitable.

Some people object to taking vows, but in the Bible, you will find many great men of God directed by covenants, promises, vows, and pledges. The psalmist was not averse to the taking of vows: “Thy vows are upon me, O God,” he said. “I will render my praises unto thee” (Psalm 56:12). My counsel in this matter is that if you are really concerned about spiritual improvement - the gaining of new power, new life, new joy, and new personal revival within your heart - you will do well to make certain vows and proceed to keep them.

Tom Haire is a rare compound of deep, tender devotion, amazing good sense, and a delightful sense of humor. There is about him absolutely nothing of the tension found in so many persons who seek to live the spiritual life. Tom is completely free in the Spirit and will not allow himself to be brought under bondage to the rudiments of the world nor the consciences of other people.

Within the last few years, a new method has been invented for imparting spiritual knowledge. Or, to be more accurate, it is not new at all, but it is an adaptation of a gadget of some years standing, one which by its origin and background belongs not to the Church but to the world. Some within the fold of the Church have thrown their mantle over it, have "blessed it with a text", and are now trying to show that it is the very gift of God for our day.

Paul said he was made a minister according to God’s dispensation, given to him to fulfill the word of God and to preach the mystery which had been hid from ages and generations - a mystery which not even Abraham knew, nor David, nor Isaiah, but is now made manifest to his saints, to whom - to the saints - God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles.

This book has been described by James L. Snyder as Tozer's valedictory. It was his last message ever given to God's people. Written shortly before his death in 1963, it was published two days after his death. It is a challenging message to all who want to walk with Christ.
