This selection, while stressing the variety of his work, focuses on those stories in which the real and the supernatural are brought into contact and conflict. The Nutcracker and the Mouse King (German: Nußknacker und Mausekönig) is a story written in 1816 by E. T. A. Hoffmann in which young Marie Stahlbaum's favorite Christmas toy, the Nutcracker, comes alive and, after defeating the evil Mouse King in battle, whisks her away to a magical kingdom populated by dolls.

The Sand-Man (German: Der Sandmann, 1816) is a short story written in German by E. T. A. Hoffmann. It was the first in an 1817 book of stories titled Die Nachtstücke (The Night Pieces). The story is told by a narrator who claims to have known Lothar. It begins by quoting three letters.

Von seinem Kindheitstrauma eingeholt fällt es Nathanael zusehends schwerer, zwischen Wahn und Wirklichkeit zu unterscheiden und so bleibt ihm am Ende nur die Flucht in den Freitod.

Es ist Weihnachten. Die kleine Marie entdeckt am Gabentisch einen Nussknacker, den sie vor ihrem Bruder Fritz in Obhut nimmt. In der Nacht erwacht dieser Nussknacker zum Leben und führt im Wohnzimmer der Familie eine Schlacht gegen ein Heer von Mäusen, das von dem Mausekönig angeführt wird. Dabei wird Marie verletzt - ganz überwältigt von den Geschehnissen. Während sich die Eltern um ihre Tochter sorgen, was sie denn nachts heimlich mache, erzählt der Pate Obergerichtsrat Droßelmeier Marie ein Märchen, das auf das Schicksal ihres Nussknackers übertragbar ist. Voller Entschlossenheit, den Nussknacker vor dem Mausekönig zu retten, geht Marie bis an ihre kindlichen Grenzen...

E. T. A. Hoffmann (1776-1822) was a German Romantic author of fantasy and horror as well as a jurist, composer, music critic, draftsman and caricaturist. His stories were highly influential during the 19th century, and he is one of the major authors of the Romantic movement. 'The Cremona Violin' is the story of Councillor Krespel, an eccentric violin maker who lives with a mysterious woman, Antonia, who has the most beautiful singing voice ever heard by anyone in the town, but she was only ever heard to sing once.
