The Island of Dr. Moreau is the definitive novel of human horror by H. G. Wells (The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, The Invisible Man), the English author hailed as "The Father of Sci-Fi". When a shipwreck survivor is brought to the remote island compound of once-eminent physiologist Dr. Moreau, he will discover that the disgraced surgeon is now creating a hybrid race of human/animal beings.

The Food of the Gods and How It Came to Earth is a science fiction novel by H. G. Wells, first published in 1904. Wells called it "a fantasia on the change of scale in human affairs.... I had hit upon [the idea] while working out the possibilities of the near future in a book of speculations called Anticipations (1901)." The novel is about a group of scientists who invent a food that accelerates the growth of children and turns them into giants when they become adults.

"The Language of Flowers" by H. G. Wells is a short essay. H. G. Wells once different, humorous social satire and ironic. During the early Victorian revival of chivalry the Language of Flowers had some considerable vogue. An English scientist, known only as the Time Traveler, constructs a machine that allows him to move back and forth through different periods of time. Testing this machine, the man travels forward to AD 802,701. Here he discovers a lazy, undisciplined group of people who do not seem interested in anything. Thinking he has seen all he needs for his research, he decides to travel back home. Upon returning to where he left his time machine, he discovers an intelligent, violent group of people called the Morlocks have stolen it.

Professor Ogilvy spotted the projectiles as they were launched from the planet Mars. Even so, when they landed and the aliens emerged, mankind was not ready. In this first-person narrative, one of the survivors who came face-to-face with the aliens tells his own true story.

H. G. Wells, best known for his science fiction novels, wrote many short stories which had the same engaging qualities as his major works. Mr. Bedford, who narrates the tale, tells of how he fell in with eccentric inventor Mr. Cavor, grew to believe in his research, helped him build a sphere for traveling in space, and then partnered with him in an expedition to the Moon. What they found was fantastic!

Mr. Britling Sees It Through tells the story of a renowned writer, Mr. Britling, a protagonist who is quite evidently an alter ego of the author. The garrulous, easy-going Mr. Britling lives with family and friends in the fictional village of Matching's Easy, located in the county of Essex, northeast of London. The novel is divided into three parts.

At 21, the passionate and headstrong Ann Veronica Stanley is determined to rule her own life. When her autocratic father forbids her, via formal letter, from attending a fashionable art-school ball, and even further refuses to allow her advanced study of science, she decides she has no choice but to leave her family home and make a fresh start alone. She escapes the stodgy suburbs to London, enrolling as a student of biology and immersing herself in a world of intellectuals, socialists, and suffragettes.

A Victorian scientist travels far into the future, and finds that suffering has been replaced by beauty, contentment, and peace. He meets the Eloi, a species descended from man, but realizes that these beautiful people are just remnants of a once-great culture; they are now weak and afraid of the dark. The Eloi have reason to be afraid. In deep tunnels beneath their paradise lurks another race descended from humanity: the sinister Morlocks.

H.G. Wells is best known for his science fiction, but some of his greatest works were in other genres. "The Passionate Friends" is a love story. It also is a story about dreams, despair, jealousy, sex, the struggle against social convention, the future of civilization, and much much more. It is written by a father to his son, "not indeed to the child you are now, but to the man you are going to be." He writes it so that one day, perhaps when he is dead, his grown son can read it and rediscover him as a friend and equal.
