Story
This is the story of what happens when the author's plans to ordain as a Buddhist monk in Thailand are derailed after he has arrived in the country. Next Life in the Afternoon is spiritual, funny, at times irreverent, and full of personal lessons learned along the way. From Next Life in the Afternoon: "I’m squatting naked on a concrete floor in the predawn coolness of Udon Thani, pouring water from a washbasin onto my head to rinse off the bar soap I used as shampoo. My hair is long and stringy. I had counted on it being shaved off by now, so I had let it grow out a bit leading up to the ...

Story
Clinging is the greatest possessiveness and attachment we have. As long as we cling, we cannot see reality. We cannot see reality because clinging is in the way. Clinging colors whatever we believe to be true. Now, it is not possible to say “all right, I’ll stop clinging”. We can’t do that. The process of taking the “me” apart, of not believing any more that this is one whole, is a gradual one. If we really want to get rid of suffering, completely and totally, then clinging has to go. The spiritual path is never one of achievement; it is always one of letting go.

Story
Self-identification with one’s state of being is the great trap. So, we must first become aware of the props we use to maintain who we think we are. It begins with: “I’m a woman” or “I’m a man.” There’s strong identification. There’s strong support for the ego, for that “I am” is the ego itself talking. Next, we identify with our abilities and our knowledge. “This is what I can do!” and “This is what I know.” Two further strong supports for the ego.

Story
In most forms of meditation, the meditator is instructed to let go of thoughts as they arise. As a result thinking is often taken unnecessarily to be something misguided or evil. This approach is misguided, says Jason Siff. In fact if we allow thoughts to arise and become mindful of the thoughts themselves, we gain tranquility and insight just as in other methods without having to reject our natural mental processes.

Story
The purpose of this book is to help the earnest seeker to understand the idea of and the 12 links of Dependent Origination. This is the most important concept to be understood on your journey to Nibbāna. The Buddha used the term Paṭicca Samuppāda, which is Pāli for dependent origination. When one understands Dependent Origination, one understands himself/herself, and the world. It is truly the answer to the question of “Who am I?” This is a 12-part series of small books for each one of the links. This is booklet is on the link of Clinging (Upadana) which represents thinking and the...

What if you could go back and sit under a tree with the Buddha and listen to him giving his original meditation instructions? What did he teach over 2500 years ago, and are those original instructions valid for today’s practitioners? Most of us cannot travel through time, but we do have the records of the Buddha’s teachings in the Pali suttas. In this book, Mark Edsel Johnson, Ph.D., demonstrates that by following a meditation practice called Tranquil Wisdom Insight Meditation or TWIM, which is directly based on the records of the Buddha’s teachings, practitioners quickly experience ...

Story
Once a person understands the rise and fall of all phenomena, then experiencing the worst that human life can give does not make one tremble. You know that it’s something passing just as the wind passes your face. You don’t know where that wind comes from, and you can’t tell where that wind is going. All you know is that a wind is blowing. You don’t know when that wind is going to end, nor if it will get stronger or weaker. Like the weather, the forecast for moods is “changeable".

Story
As a profound thinker, as the most profound thinker the world has ever known, the Buddha had two ways of speaking to people. At one time he would address them in words that expressed the utmost depth of his knowledge. At other times, he would tell them simple things within the compass of their ready understanding, in words that were taken from the ordinary speech used among themselves. In both modes of speech, he spoke what was true.

Story
By performing an act of body, speech, or mind as the outcome of one’s volition, one also creates a possibility to act in a similar way in future. One, so as to speak, lays foundations for creating a way of behaving, a habit or a tendency. In other words, one adds some new or strengthens some old feature of one’s personality, perpetuating thereby one’s state of conditioned existence and determining the quality of one’s future character.

Story
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College-Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

Story
After nearly eighteen months at Basgiath War College, Violet Sorrengail knows there’s no more time for lessons. No more time for uncertainty. Because the battle has truly begun, and with enemies closing in from outside their walls and within their ranks, it’s impossible to know who to trust. Now Violet must journey beyond the failing Aretian wards to seek allies from unfamiliar lands to stand with Navarre. The trip will test every bit of her wit, luck, and strength, but she will do anything to save what she loves—her dragons, her family, her home, and him.

It’s a beautiful day in Newport, Rhode Island, when Phoebe Stone arrives at the grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, not a bag in sight, alone. Phoebe is here because she’s dreamed of coming for years—she hoped to shuck oysters and take sunset sails with her husband, only now she’s here without him, at rock bottom, and determined to have one last decadent splurge on herself.

Brooke Shields has spent a lifetime in the public eye. Growing up as a child actor and model, her every feature was scrutinized, her every decision judged. Today Brooke faces a different kind of scrutiny: that of being a “woman of a certain age.” And yet, for Brooke, the passage of time has brought freedom. At fifty-nine, she feels more comfortable in her skin, more empowered and confident than she did decades ago in those famous Calvin Kleins. Now, in Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old, she’s changing the narrative about women and aging.
