About this listen

A spiritual wellness guide, Spirited shows you how to find more fulfillment and peace in modern life by applying timeless Buddhist wisdom.

Beneath Candice Kumai’s polished image as a wellness icon, she was tormented by anxiety, competitiveness and deep inner suffering. It wasn’t until she re-embraced the Buddhist principles she’d been taught in childhood that she began to change her life for the better—even making a pilgrimage to her mother’s home country of Japan to study in the mountains with Buddhist monks.

Full of wisdom and raw honesty, Spirited recounts her journey and shares the Buddhist practices that transformed her life so you can, too.

"Candice Kumai is the wellness & spiritual teacher for the next generation, a PIONEER of her time." (Dr. Andrew Weil, founder/director of the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine)

Excellent narration & inspiring words!

I sometimes listen to audiobooks on my commute to work, but often have a hard time finding a book I want to listen to- even if the book itself is great, the narration doesn’t do it for me. Candice’s book is 10/10 for me for both the wise and inspiring words and the engaging, clear, & warm narration style, which is literally the best narration I’ve heard of any audiobook I’ve listened to! I re-signed up to Audible just for this book, and am hoping she releases more audiobooks and/or narrates others’ books in the near future!!

Just what my soul needed

I’ve been a fan of Candice from meeting her during our Bar Method workouts in NYC to her cookbooks to her podcast.. I feel like her audio book came at the perfect time in my life when I needed to hear these life talks from an old barre buddy.
I had been struggling a lot myself since leaving NYC, and finding my way, carving my path, balancing life, meanwhile caring for my mental health, family, work, friends, and new life in a new city. It was all becoming too much for me. I was spiraling.
I’m subscribed to Candice’s newsletter and learned of this audio book through that. It came at the time when my soul needed this the most. I am SO grateful. I feel like Candice and I have similar struggles with mental health, finances, friendships, growing up with mixed cultures.. and this book has spoken so deeply to my heart.
But beyond my own things— I feel like Spirited is a wonderful reminder of the fundamental basics that make the human race and people a loving society.
Candice’s story telling is lovely and fun and entertaining. I remember when we’d talk after Bar Method, she was always a warm and kind girlfriend.
This audiobook is as if your best friend is talking heart to heart with you. I love that so much. It’s a lot of real talk. Practices on being introspective and things to really be mindful of, things to consider and understand the gravity that certain things play on our every day. I highly recommend Spirited to anyone in this modern day who just wants to be reminded of what we can do to focus on what’s most important in life. They have become such great tips and useful tools that I am so grateful for!! Thanks, Candice!!! For going from the locker room of Bad Method in Soho to my ear pods and voice during me commute driving to and from work. I love Spirited so much. So grateful that you shared this audio with us!!!

Walnut Haz

Love the intermix of Christianity and Buddhist mythology, supporting the commonality of both teachings are not in conflict with each other.

Relatable mindfulness & wellness guide without the BS!

Loved listening to this! Candice Kumai doesn’t preach about how to feel at peace with oneself or achieve spiritual enlightenment in the traditional “do this, not that” sort of way. She takes us on her own super vulnerable journey, conveying how she eventually overcame her own struggles in order to underscore - in a relatable and encouraging way - that positive change is within our grasp too. Spirited is truly enjoyable to listen to, even though many of the topics are quite serious! I finished the book feeling empowered and have already started to apply some of Candice’s takeaways into my own life. Highly recommend!!

Five stars !!!!!

Candice has a steady and calm voice and it is easy to listen to. I am much older than her, but she makes me reflect on my life.
She has the courage to open up and talk about life, especially her darkside.
Her encounters with Buddhist monks gave her a peaceful mind and she gave me (a Buddhist)
insight of Buddha's Dharma (Teaching). I understand we are not alone suffering through this life.
We are all ok to have dark and light in our lives. This is the " Makes me think about my life and reflect deeply on myself" BOOK.
Thank you, Candice.

Perfect balance…chef’s kiss :)

I’ve been following and consuming the work of Candice Kumai for several years. This book is the perfect balance of life reflections, practical actions, spiritual education, dash of science, and inspiration. I’ll definitely be listening again to implement and integrate what I leaned into my life…and travel plans :)
