Publisher's summary

Jay Shetty, social media superstar and host of the number one podcast On Purpose, distills the timeless wisdom he learned as a monk into practical steps anyone can take every day to live a less anxious, more meaningful life.

When you think like a monk, you’ll understand:

  • How to overcome negativity
  • How to stop overthinking
  • Why comparison kills love
  • How to use your fear
  • Why you can’t find happiness by looking for it
  • How to learn from everyone you meet
  • Why you are not your thoughts
  • How to find your purpose
  • Why kindness is crucial to success
  • And much more

Shetty grew up in a family where you could become one of three things—a doctor, a lawyer, or a failure. His family was convinced he had chosen option three: Instead of attending his college graduation ceremony, he headed to India to become a monk, to meditate every day for four to eight hours, and devote his life to helping others.

After three years, one of his teachers told him that he would have more impact on the world if he left the monk’s path to share his experience and wisdom with others. Heavily in debt, and with no recognizable skills on his résumé, he moved back home in North London with his parents. Shetty reconnected with old school friends—many working for some of the world’s largest corporations—who were experiencing tremendous stress, pressure, and unhappiness, and they invited Shetty to coach them on well-being, purpose, and mindfulness.

Since then, Shetty has become one of the world’s most popular influencers. In 2017, he was named in the Forbes magazine 30-under-30 for being a game-changer in the world of media. In 2018, he had the number one video on Facebook with more than 360 million views. His social media following totals more than 38 million, he has produced more than 400 viral videos that have amassed more than eight billion views, and his podcast, On Purpose, is consistently ranked the world’s number one health and wellness podcast.

In this inspiring, empowering book, Shetty draws on his time as a monk to show us how we can clear the roadblocks to our potential and power. Combining ancient wisdom and his own rich experiences in the ashram, Think Like a Monk reveals how to overcome negative thoughts and habits and access the calm and purpose that lie within all of us. He transforms abstract lessons into advice and exercises we can all apply to reduce stress, improve relationships, and give the gifts we find in ourselves to the world. Shetty proves that everyone can—and should—think like a monk.

Simply amazing!

I'm an otr driver and was having a lot codependency issues with myself. I've read a few books about mindlessness thinking and meditation and got to this book. I LOVE IT! He confirms everything I need help with in my life and is so detailed on how to get started and continuously work on myself. I recommend this book for everyone. If we all thought like monks we wouldn't have most of the problems we have today. It's very calming and after just a day from reading I already feel 100% like a better version of myself. The people around me feel it too.

Jays passion is contagious

Just as Jay fell in love after hearing Guaranga Das speak, I’ve fallen in love with Jays passion and “thinking like a Monk”. Every word is powerful and transforming. It’s one of those books you have to listen to more than once to absorb it. Plus take advantage of all the tools Jay provides on how to apply what he teaches. In times of uncertainty, what I’m learning from Jay is helping me develop a new perspective and see things like daily routine as a positive and something that I can enjoy. There’s so much to learn you can get overwhelmed. Take your time getting thought it. Break each chapters into two listening sessions. Let yourself really hear what he is sharing. It’s gold for your well being, contentment and ultimate happiness. I can’t wait to finish and start over and continue the journey I’ve started. Thank you Jay! ❤️

Life Altering, Beautiful and Clear

I had never heard of Jay before. I stumbled upon this book and it turned out to be one of the best books I’ve read. I’m Listening to approximately 20 books per year, and this one I have to say absolutely grabbed me and taught me what direction my life it’s going to head in. I didn’t find this book as much as this book found me. The author explains very clearly and easy to understand the teachings/lessons of what he experienced. Anyone of any age can relate and Learn from this book.

Worth the time to read!

This was a book I saw in a social media posting. I've always love the videos from Jay Sherry and was excited to begin reading (listening). Seeing it was 10hrs long was a bit intimidating. But I've been looking for a change, not sure of the change and felt like this book could help me with my search. And it held up for the challenge! I grabbed so many different "nuggets" that I can put into my day to day to help me along my peaceful journey.

The “new” hotel bible!

My dream is that this book be put in every hotel room in the world! Just like the Gideons
did with the Bible.
I absolutely love everything this young man has to say!!

Inspiring but not revelatory

Jay's way of speaking and energy resonates with me. His story and messages might strike you in a way that others have not. That said, there are other teachers and guru's that go into a deeper dive of what Jay talks about.

Good but not a lot of new content.

Lot about meditation and authors own experiences. Not much practical workable advice. Still worth reading though!
