Regan Hamilton-Sweeney kæmper en sej kamp for at redde sin fars og virksomhedens ry, mens hun samtidig prøver at få styr på sit liv efter separationen fra sin utro mand, Keith Lamplighter. Færgen til Block Island var bagud i forhold til sejlplanen, og det var helt mørkt da Regan nåede frem til Gould'ernes ekstensive sommerbolig denne sidste officielle weekend af den sidste sommer i 1950'erne lige før hendes tredje år i high school begyndte.

Den 13. juli 1977, et halvt år efter skyderiet i Central Park, udbryder der strømafbrydelse, som mørklægger New York City og kaster byen ud i halvandet døgns kaos. Jenny og Mercer leder stadig efter William, Regan og Keiths børn er ligeledes forsvundet, og Charlie prøver fortsat at hjælpe vicekriminalinspektør Pulaski med at finde frem til punkrockernes opfindelse, inden det er for sent.

Nogle bryder ind hos Jenny og sætter ild til lejligheden. Politiet ser ikke ud til at forstå alvoren og mener, at det blot er junkier, der er på udkig efter en nem gevinst.
