Kahlil Gibran (1883-1931) was a Lebanese American of Assyrian descent, an artist, poet and writer. He was born Gibran Khalil Gibran in Lebanon (at the time a Syrian Province of the Ottoman Empire) and spent much of his productive life in the United States. While most of Gibran's early writings were in Syriac and Arabic, most of his work published after 1918 was in English. Gibran also took part in the New York Pen League, also known as the "immigrant poets" (al-mahjar), alongside other important Lebanese American authors.

Gibran considered The Prophet his greatest achievement. He said: "I think I've never been without The Prophet since I first conceived it in Mount Lebanon. It seems to have been a part of me....I kept the manuscript four years before I delivered it over to my publisher because I wanted to be sure, I wanted to be very sure, that every word of it was the very best I had to offer."

In this book, Khalil Gibran describes the Middle Eastern social issues at the beginning of the 20th century through the story of a young man who falls in love with a woman betrothed to the nephew of a prominent religious man. When their secret meetings are discovered, she is forbidden to leave her house, and their dreams and hearts are crushed by the cruel society.

This collection, first published in 1914, contains 28 short pieces in prose and verse, which present themes frequently explored in Gibran's other works. These include love, death, creation myths and spiritual realization.

The Forerunner is Gibran's second book in the English language built upon the mystical and spiritual thematic foundations that he had laid down with The Madman. "You are your own forerunner, and the towers you have builded are but the foundation of your giant-self. And that self too shall be a foundation."
