There are two great misconceptions about Cinco de Mayo in the United States, despite the fact it has become one of the country’s most beloved days. The first misconception is that the date marks the Independence of Mexico, and the second is that the celebration was imported in relatively recent times by Mexican immigrants. In fact, May 5 does not mark Mexico's independence (which is celebrated on September 16) but the day of the most important battle in the history of the country, fought against the French.

For centuries, beautifully illustrated fairy-tale volumes have rested innocently on kids' night tables around the world, long ago relegated to the dubious honor of being branded as "children's literature". But every story is a file packed with information, and Cinderella, Snow White, Puss in Boots, and Bluebeard have always intimated that perhaps they have more to tell besides "beautiful" stories, the same ones that animated the minds of several generations of children.

The history of the border between Mexico and the United States extends alongside 200 years and 2,000 miles - the tortuous epic of a man-made line that has not only hardened and become more solid over time, but has changed meanings too. In the beginning, it was an idea - the approximate and inhospitable edge of the vast Spanish Empire and the beginning of no man's land. Then, it was a line on paper - a porous boundary with no physical barriers.

The butcher of the Alamo and Goliad. The traitor who sold half of Mexico. The Napoleon of the West. Mr. Fifteen Nails. The Mother Country's seducer. Almost 150 years after his death, a lot of name-calling is still being directed towards Antonio López de Santa Anna, president of Mexico 11 times in the 19th century, and today, the vast majority of his compatriots consider him the greatest traitor in history.

At a time in antiquity when most of Europe was covered with forests and wandering tribes, Mexico had already developed complex civilizations, beginning with the Olmecs and followed by the Maya, a civilization with advanced knowledge of medicine, engineering and astronomy. The Maya calculated the precession of the equinoxes and cycles of the Pleiades, on which they based their year, since they believed they had come from that constellation.

During the two major wars of the 20th century, America and Germany did indeed clash against each other, and in both cases, American entry into the war was a decisive factor in the defeat of the Germans. In World War I, it was the discovery of a German plan to attack the US through Mexico that overturned public opinion against neutrality, and in World War II, it wasn't until Pearl Harbor. For the Kaiser in the First World War and the Führer in the Second World War, utilizing Mexico as a strategic base to importune and hold back the US was a priority in the Americas.

The life story of Jesus of Nazareth, considered by billions of Christians to be the messiah prophesized in the Old Testament of the Bible, is perhaps the most famous in history. Described in detail in the New Testament, Jesus comes from both divine yet humble roots, born in a manger to a young woman, but in time he leads a fervent following as tales of his miracles spread across the Holy Land.

Hoy, el profeta de Nazareth sigue despertando un vivo interés en una amplia cantidad de círculos ortodoxos y heterodoxos. Los libros sobre él son tan abundantes como la proverbial planta de mostaza. Jesús, cuya muerte ocurrió hace casi dos mil años, continúa siendo la más célebre figura religiosa, seguida por cuando menos dos mil millones de personas en todo el mundo, y fuente de inspiración para algunas más.

La frontera entre México y Estados se extiende a lo largo de poco más de doscientos años de historia y dos mil millas de terreno, equivalentes a 3,180 kilómetros. Esta línea creada por el hombre, protagonista de una complicada historia, se ha fortalecido y solidificado con el paso de los años. Sus significados también han cambiado. En un principio era una idea, el fin aproximado e inhóspito de un vasto imperio español y el inicio de la “tierra de nadie”. Después fue un trazo en un papel, una raya porosa, sin barreras físicas, que en tiempos de paz se convirtió en sitio de intercambio y cooperación, y en épocas de conflicto en terreno de choque no sólo de dos pueblos distintos, sino del Norte y el Sur de la geopolítica internacional.

La Navidad es la fiesta más importante del calendario internacional. Después de los respectivos días que exaltan el orgullo nacional de los países —el Día de la Independencia en Estados Unidos, el Día de la Victoria en Rusia, el Día de la Bastilla en Francia— sin duda es el 25 de diciembre el que articula la vida familiar, el trabajo y la economía de prácticamente todo el orbe… incluyendo muchos países no cristianos.
