About this listen
This audio edition is read by the author, Andrew Gold, and includes an exclusive author Q&A.
"Andrew Gold is the new Jon Ronson. Smart, funny, brave and deeply thoughtful, The Psychology of Secrets is an absolute must read" - Will Storr, bestselling author of The Status Game and The Science of Storytelling
--
Cult leaders, murderers, psychopaths – and you. Take a deep dive into the bizarre psychology of secrecy with Andrew Gold, award-winning investigative journalist and host of On the Edge With Andrew Gold.
We all keep secrets. 97 per cent of us are hiding a secret right now, and on average we each hold thirteen at any one time. There’s a one-in-two chance that those secrets involve a breach of trust, a lie or a financial impropriety. They are the stuff of gossip, of novels and of classic dramas; secrets form a major part of our hidden inner lives.
Andrew Gold knows this better than anyone. As a public figure, he has found himself the unwitting recipient of hundreds of strangers' most private revelations. This set him on a journey to understand this critical part of our societies and lives. Why do we keep secrets? Why are we fascinated by those of others? What happens to our mind when we confess?
Drawing from psychology, history, social science, philosophy and personal interviews, The Psychology of Secrets is a rollicking journey through the history of secrecy.

"That Andrew Gold is a truly edgy journalist, broadcaster and now writer is - but should not be - one of our culture’s best kept secrets" - David Baddiel, bestselling author of The God Desire

As a Hillary voter, a New York Times reporter, and frequent attendee at her local gay bars, Nellie Bowles fit right in with her San Francisco neighbors and friends—until she started questioning whether the progressive movement she knew and loved was actually helping people. When her colleagues suggested that asking such questions meant she was “on the wrong side of history,” Bowles did what any reporter worth her salt would do: she started investigating for herself. The answers she found were stranger—and funnier—than she expected.

Since September 11, 2001, the Western world has been preoccupied with Islam and its role in terrorism. Yet, public debate about the faith is polarized. One camp praises "the religion of peace", while the other claims all Muslims are terrorists. Canadian human rights activist Yasmine Mohammed believes both sides are dangerously wrong. In Unveiled: How Western Liberals Empower Radical Islam, Yasmine speaks her truth as a woman born in the Western world yet raised in a fundamentalist Islamic home. Despite being a first-generation Canadian, she never felt at home in the West.

Story
This is the story of how King Charles was shaped and moulded by his heritage. His mother was the woman he always loved but could never be close to. As Queen she held the Pandora’s box of the crown and all he could do was wait and learn. In his mother’s old age, he finally received the affection and respect from her he had craved for so long. This book documents his life through many personal anecdotes from his family and his friends from the moment the guns saluted his birth until St. Edwards Crown was placed on his head and he was officially declared as the King at his Coronation.

The Kennedy name has long been synonymous with wealth, power, glamor, and—above all else—integrity. But this carefully constructed veneer hides a dark truth: the pattern of Kennedy men physically and psychologically abusing women and girls, leaving a trail of ruin and death in each generation’s wake. Through decades of scandal after scandal—from sexual assaults to reputational slander, suicides to manslaughter—the family and their defenders have kept the Kennedy brand intact.

Story
Gender identity ideology is about more than Twitter storms and using the right pronouns. In just 10 years, laws, company policies, school and university curricula, sport, medical protocols, and the media have been reshaped to privilege self-declared gender identity over biological sex. People are being shamed and silenced for attempting to understand the consequences of redefining "man" and "woman". While compassion for transgender lives is well-intentioned, it is stifling much-needed inquiry into the significance of our bodies.

“Here’s Johnny!” Probably everyone in America knows the phrase, whether they watched every episode of The Tonight Show or none because they had to go to bed early on school nights. From 1962 to 1992, Johnny Carson and his Tonight Show dominated the American consciousness. Henry Bushkin was Carson’s best friend and lawyer during that period, and his book is a tautly rendered and remarkably nuanced portrait of Carson, revealing not only how he truly was, but why.

We are in the midst of a global mental health crisis, and mental illnesses are on the rise. But what causes mental illness? And why are mental health problems so hard to treat? Story
Although clinical research has been conducted on narcissism as a disorder, less is known about its effects on victims who are in toxic relationships with partners with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Individuals with this disorder engage in chronic devaluation and manipulation of their partners, a psychological and emotional phenomenon known as "narcissistic abuse". Unfortunately, the full extent of what narcissistic abuse entails is not taught in any psychology class or diagnostic manual.

Podcasters playing off of each other for "likes"
This was such an enlightening book. I won't watch reality shows because I know that they are just choreographed.
But, I've been watching quite a few podcasts, especially the Scientology protesters, and I didn't even think about them choreographing with each other.
Now, that's making me second guess myself.

A fascinating look into the history of secrecy from ancient times to modern society.
There were some squeamish moments with the blood and gush of rupshering eyeballs. And my own queasyness at knowing and holding onto others' secrets. Wanting to know more even though it made me uncomfortable.

Didn't disappoint.
Very interesting idea for a book with lots of unique stories. Performance was good, and I'm glad Andrew's Australian accent is better then his American one.

The author uses many real life examples of secrets that have been shared with him to delve into the psychology that compels everyone to keep secrets.
The author keeps the tempo lively and interesting throughout the book. If you’re interested in understanding why we keep secrets, this is the book to listen to.

Delivers as Promised
As a casual watcher of the author's book, I enjoyed the book. He went deep into the nature of secrets, just as promised.
I related much of it to the Netflix show, The Circle. The entire premise of the show revolves around secrets and social media moderated connections.

Andrew Knows His Stuff
Andrew, in my view, is unafraid to speak his true opinions and doesn’t snuggle up to any group or opinion. This book is full of facts about groups you think you know, but goes a bit further than most.

Remarkably captivating and yet scientifically sound manuscript. Barva, mr. Gold!
I heard about the book on one of Andrew Gold’s programs on YouTube as I regularly watch them.
I was stunned how engaging and informative the book was! The author pulled out historic events, referenced scientific facts/studies, event mentioned great masterpieces of the Shakespeare and Dostoyevsky while vividly intertwining them with his own lived experience to craft remarkably captivating storyline 🌸
Outstanding!
