About this listen

Get what you need to achieve your objectives and produce results

Influence Without Authority is the classic guide to getting what you need from people you don't control. Getting things done requires collaboration, and convincing others to contribute requires political skill; this book introduces the Exchange Model, in which you get what you need by offering something of value in return. The key lies in knowing what the other person values - that's their "currency", and it's your immediate tool for coaxing their cooperation. This model has been proven over decades, as organizations around the world have turned away from frustration and resignation toward collaboration and results. This book shows you how to implement the Exchange Model at the personal, team, and organizational level to raise the bar for performance and leadership.

This new third edition has been updated reflect the changing face of the workplace, and includes new examples and information on geographically dispersed virtual teams. Supplementary PDF materials facilitate classroom and training use with discussions, role-play, videos, and other ancillaries that deepen understanding and promote practical application.

  • Get what you need from the people who have it through mutual exchange
  • Think in terms of interest, and pinpoint the "currencies" other people trade in
  • Apply the Exchange Model across entire organizations to lead major change
  • Learn practical real-world strategies for influencing those you do not control

The ability to influence those not under your authority is becoming ever more valuable. Organizations are flattening, and outside contractors are taking on larger roles than ever before - getting results now means lateral cooperation, often across borders, time zones, organizations, and more. Influence Without Authority provides a proven model for success in this new environment, with expert guidance for real-world application.

Time we'll spent

Long, but stick with it, it is so valuable. My eyes Ave been opened to see where I was failing in building relationships in a very difficult environment. I've already used these lessons to gain momentum in an otherwise antagonistic workplace.

too much tactics, not enough context

lots of good advice, but too little focus on mutually positive outcomes. It largely (not completely) comes across as tools that could just as easily be used for manipulation, with far too little win-win context in my opinion.

get ready to take notes

at first it seemed hard to stay tuned but as I applied it to the real world it became more and more relevant.

Solid ideas, repeated too many times

Great concepts but it just drags on. PDF for audible book could be improved as many exhibits are missing.

Empiric, Realistic & Useful

I can tell as a corporate player that this book reflects and analyzes most of the environments and situations you face in the real world. The voice in the story is flat and sometimes boring, so you better grab a cup of coffee, pay full attention to the listening or run risk of falling asleep

Nice tips long stories

Given the fast pace of our life and trying to stay updated and improve my personal experience I intend to listen to audiobooks. The title of this book is so attractive and the content as rich, however I wished if those tips were summarized with few examples to explain the concept, rather than telling long stories that I had to pause many times and can’t get back into the rhythm every time I do.
Art of Summarizing!!!! Which I failed in this review, obviously.

Accompanying PDF is out of date

The pdf doesn't match the audio content! I filed a case with customer service more than a month ago. They never provide updates proactively, and now it seems like they're waiting on the publisher!

I wish I didn't purchase this book and spend all the additional time and energy following up with customer service.

How to trick people into thinking you are genuine

Oof this was rough- I’d heard great things but this book seemed almost dystopian the way it talked about manipulating people.
