Publisher's summary

Bloomsbury presents Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas, read by Elizabeth Evans.

Never trust an assassin.

Celaena’s story continues in this second book in the #1 bestselling Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas.

Celaena Sardothien won a brutal contest to become the King’s Champion. But she is far from loyal to the crown. Though she goes to great lengths to hide her secret, her deadly charade becomes more difficult when she realizes she is not the only one seeking justice. Her search for answers ensnares those closest to her, and no one is safe from suspicion—not the Crown Prince Dorian; not Chaol, the Captain of the Guard; not even her best friend, Nehemia, a princess with a rebel heart.

Then, one terrible night, the secrets they have all been keeping lead to an unspeakable tragedy. As Celaena’s world shatters, she will be forced to decide once and for all where her true loyalties lie...and what she is willing to fight for.

The second book in the #1 New York Times bestselling Throne of Glass series returns listeners to a land destroyed by liars, where one woman’s truth is the only thing that can save them all.

Predictable

I originally started this series based on the cover saying something like, “fans of Game of Thrones will enjoy”, this series is not comparable to Game of Thrones. Very juvenile and predictable so far, and this “assassin” is a whiny teenager girl. It’s not terrible and I’m somewhat curious about what will happen so I’m going to continue on to the next one. It’s like one of those terrible movies you can’t stop watching, you know what’s going to happen, but you still have to watch.. 🤦🏼‍♀️

MUST READ

This story really just gets better and better. The subtle foreshadowing and complex plot continue to complement perfectly. The main characters are so unique and the romance is the best. MUST read.

got the job done

couldn't put the first two down and then life got caught up so I listened/read this one. only draw back is the silly accents and when they say words you said differently in your head. but if you never read on your own, then I guess you're fine 🤷‍♂️

solid sequel

Overall a good story, some parts were kind of boring though. I like a bit more action than what is in here but it did set the series up well with the background and bigger plot that was missing from the first book

Nor as Clever

There were parts I litterally found myself rolling my eyes. Parts that my guesses were spot on. And yet, there were other parts that took me pleasantly by surprise.
I didn't mind the 'love triangle' that this book throws around, and I thought I was clever to guess who Dorian would fall for.... I was a little more wrong on that guess.... due to some awful circumstances.
Many of the residual questions from book one were answered in this book, and I appreciated that.

Amazing Narrator - as good as the books

I can’t say enough - I’m so glad the same narrator has been on the whole audio series. It’s refreshing, because she’s absolutely fabulous.
I love this series and the wonderful, complex layers and character development. My new favorite author after finishing ACOTAR and taking on TOG.

These books rock!

The throne of glass novels became a quick favorite of mine, Elizabeth Evans performs the voices of all of the characters beautifully, changing inflections for different accents from different kingdoms. It really adds to the story, which is already amazing in my opinion! I love the romance, i love the adventure, the SUPRISES, the twists and turns that Sarah J Maas adds to her stories add to the nail biting effect of the story. I have listened to and read these books at least 12 times each.

I cannot say enough good things about these books, if you are thinking about giving them a read, or listen, DO IT! there will be no regrets!

Celaena is caught between the King & her mortality

Crown of Midnight starts right on the heels of the first book. Celaenia Sardothien now having won the contest, has a small amount of freedom, which is to say no freedom at all as the King holds a tight leash on her as everyone she holds dear is literally under his thumb, under threat of torture and death should she fail to do her job! Her job to be his personal assassin, he points, she murders, no questions asked! She is not to get caught and she is to leave no trace... Only Celaena doesn't she eye to eye with the king she hates and so she walks a tight line between king and her own morality!
Once again Elizabeth Evans gives us a perfectly nuanced performance!

Two story lines

There are 2 story lines with no warning. Pay attention because I know I didn’t! But I didn’t give up!
I’m going to read the next one!

Better, but

I still don't care for romantic entanglement of the story! If I wanted romance I would read a romance novel! However, since this book is under "fantasy", maybe the author was making a statement! 😁

I found this story development was somewhat less chaotic than the previous two!

I only kept reading because the concept of the story is intriguing!
