Anger, hurt, grief, worry, and other intense feelings can be overwhelming, and how you react to these emotions can impact your ability to maintain relationships, succeed at work, or even think straight! If you find it difficult to understand, express, and process intense emotions - and most of us do - this book is for you.
Calming the Emotional Storm is your guide to coping with difficult emotions calmly and responsibly by using powerful skills from dialectical behavior therapy. Over the years, DBT had saved the lives of countless people fighting depression and suicidal thoughts, but Linehan had never revealed that her pioneering work was inspired by her own desperate struggles as a young woman. Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Both types of kneejerk reactions can have lasting and unintended consequences, affecting our friendships, careers, families, and romantic relationships. The truth is, overreacting hurts us as much as it hurts the people around us. You may see overreacting as an unchangeable part of your personality, but in reality, this tendency, like any other, can be unlearned.

Don't let title throw you off
Although some might be attracted to the book by the title, others (that might REALLY benefit) might be turned off by it. It's an excellent book, promoting a far better understanding of self, needs and skills to improve effective emotional management AND communication with self and others! It bridges the gaps we have between words/language and a deep understanding of what things really mean and how to apply it all. Chapters end with summarized key points, exercises and tips! Extremely well thought out and written.

Great Lessons and info, but terrible recording
I'd definitely recommend this book to others as it provided immediate assistance in me dealing with my emotions. However I would prep them that the recording itself is pretty rough, especially in the beginning. You could literally hear where they were splicing the recordings together in editing and the lady's voice sounded extremely robotic throughout the book. But hey it's a small thing compared to the actual knowledge and skills gained. Thank you for this book and thank you for making it audio book as well.

Written in plain English
An easy and practical approach to learning DBT skills. The narrator and author do a great job with this one. Highly recommend.

Very helpful
I was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder a few years ago and I’ve been trying pretty much everything I’ve seen in ways of Dialectical Behavior Therapy and most are pretty dry and hard to get into without falling asleep. This was easy to listen to and I found the narrator very soothing. I plan on listening to this over and over because it has a lot of helpful information.

Applicability to daily life.
Nonjudgmental approach with a pleasant tone of voice. I will likely listen to again and buy the book if there isn’t a pdf. (Needed) Is there a pdf. Why 15 word minimum review?

great reality-based
this is a great addition to the dbt book. I took the classes years ago and this is a great reminder of how to keep things in control that seem out of reach
