This story isn’t for the faint-hearted—or for anyone who thinks they’ll simply listen to a few chapters and go to bed. It’s an up-all-night, soul-searing ride of sin and salvation. A brazenly sexy tale of a sinner and a saint who must fight through hell to claim each other.
This book explores dark themes. Please heed the trigger warnings before listening. Your mental health matters.
They warned me that the very sight of me would incite a side of Maverick I would want to flee in fear of. But I had no place else to go. My only option was to brave his wrath to survive.
His darkness reaches into me, pulling at something raw, something I don’t understand. With every word he slays me, his every touch burns along my skin. He breaks down my walls, igniting my fiery temper all the while laying bare desires I was never meant to feel, much less act on.
Beneath the fire and fury, I glimpse the cracks in his armor and the man he’s desperately trying to hide. But the longer I stay, the harder it is to tell where my survival ends and his begins.
To want him is to risk everything—to give him my heart is to risk the last thing I’m holding on to with a deadly grip: my life. The only way to survive may be to surrender to the fire, let it consume me, and pray I come out the other side.

Burning Ember is such a powerful glimpse into the life of a fictional motorcycle club in New Mexico, featuring an assortment of characters who abide by their own club code. What I love most about this story, and in particular THIS motorcycle club story, is that there is so much character and story building for each of the main characters. Coming in at 15.5 hours of listening, I finished the story feeling complete with one story closing, and the potential for other stories to follow.
Marie Hawkins is a new-to-me voice and her performance as Ember in this audiobook was commanding, yet vulnerable. Marie had me in a powerful grip as soon as the prologue ended. Her timing, and the unique tone of her voice captures the essence that is Ember. While the draw to this audiobook might be the promise of “hot male bikers” make no mistake; Marie holds her own as the heroine as well as for the secondary female characters. Ember’s overall innocence, traumatic past, and fierce determination is wildly captivating through Marie’s voice. I immediately went to audible and added three of her books to my TBL.
Joe Arden is the duality that is Maverick. When we first get a glimpse of this man, 10 years older than Ember, he is a closed off shell of himself. He is triggered by Ember’s presence at the club and is drawn to her in a way that weakens his defenses. Joe always finds his way into his character’s shadows and Mav is no exception. His slight New York/New Jersey accent is worn in and full of conviction, and at times you can sense the obvious disdain he has for Ember’s presence. Additionally, Joe voices the other prominent men of the club, particularly Dozer and Taz (my favorite) with conviction. Joe never fails to create a soundscape of distinction when multiple male characters are in the room. This book is one of the best examples.
I really appreciate the development of the story, characters and relationship between Ember and Mav, as well as Ember with other members of the crew. I adore the slow-burn, because some of the best romantic world building exists in those incremental moments. I am waiting so patiently for the next installment of this series because I need to know what happens with the rest of the club.
What a beautiful ride this story is 🎧🖤
