joe untethered is a sight to behold

Ninety minutes and some loose change. A mosaic of pieces classic, contemporary and original. The My Soul To Take: Live and Untethered tour is a trio of performances specifically curated to bind together worlds that would otherwise be seen as separate entities. This Baltimore performance showcases the final stop on the tour.

Loneliness. Passion. Duality. Loss. A landscape many of us as listeners and readers have traversed in the landscape of our own journeys, only to be reflected through the written words and voices of storytellers spanning centuries. Joe has captured this finite span of time from Poe, Mary Shelley, and Dostoevsky to Evelyn Montgomery, Riley Edwards, and Ariel Anderson.

The journey itself showcases the talent of Joe’s voice beyond what many listeners revere him for in contemporary works. You can hear a side of Joe that is philosophical, rhetorical and even, perhaps, a bit whimsical. The talent of his voice highlighting classic works (such as the Russian accented Dostoevsky story “White Nights” and the madness of Viktor from Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein”) speak to Joe’s range not only as a voice actor but from an omniscient POV that is elevated & reflective.

I attended the Boston leg of the show. When I try to explain the physicality of Joe’s performance (as I imagine it also played out in Baltimore) it is best summarized as a dance between a man, a microphone, and the visual language that was repurposed as a mode of transportation from one port, one poet, to the next.

This performance is incredible, and for me, the poignancy and power of it lives in the message Joe crafted and brought to life as a reflection of our own human experiences. This performance and tour coincidences with the release of his debut book of poetry shadow.self (in which the divergence of self is examined as separate parts of a fragmented reflection). So the meaning of this whole show? It’s personal. Intimate. And unlike anything you’ve heard from Joe before.
