Patrick Troughton plays the second Doctor in this four-episode adventure from 1967, set on Earth's moon and featuring a return appearance by the emotionless Cybermen. The year is 2070, and the Earth's weather is controlled by a device called the Gravitron which is under threat from a plague epidemic and the Cybermen.

The world is held in the grip of a second Ice Age, and faces total destruction from the rapidly advancing glaciers. Doctor Who, with Victoria and Jamie, lands at a top scientific base in England, where they have just unearthed an ancient Ice Warrior. Aliens from Mars, preserved in the ice for centuries and now revitalised, the Ice Warriors feel ready to take over... Can the Doctor overcome these warlike Martians and halt the relentless approach of the ice glaciers?

On the planet Telos, the Doctor and his friends encounter a party of archaeologists intent on uncovering the mythical "tomb of the Cybermen". Only the Doctor seems aware of the folly of this venture, but suddenly it's too late, the ice tombs are open, and the Cybermen are coming back to life.

The TARDIS brings its occupants to Calico Three, an Earth-like planetoid where industrial foundries are worked alongside sophisticated technology. The Doctor is staggered to learn about the Resurrection Plant, which re-births anyone mortally wounded in the line of work. While Jamie is put to work in the foundry, Zoe and the Doctor investigate the Plant—but when the machine goes terribly wrong, they must work with the locals to combat a horrifying monster. The Doctor also uncovers a shameful secret that, for him at least, hits close to home.

Many thousands of years ago, strange crystalline creatures came down from the stars and settled on the planet of the Gonds. Over the years they educated the Gonds through teaching machines in the great Hall of Learning. In return, the Gonds periodically selected their two most brilliant scholars to become the ‘companions’ of these mysterious beings. But when the Doctor, Jamie and Zoe arrive on the planet, they soon discover the true evil purpose of the aliens and learn what it really means to be companions of the Krotons.
