Story
Sailing out into deep water is deceptive, especially when the weather is beautiful, the sky crystal clear. The tropics can lull you into complacency. This is the story of a Rasta and his girlfriend going fishing on a borrowed motorboat, and the separate tale of a couple traveling the islands on their sailboat. They have little in common until things go wrong. Sailing in the same waters, with no knowledge of each other, they come to share the life-threatening challenges the sea can offer them, without there being a storm in sight.

Story
Motels dot the highways of America, providing a range of services and prices. We use them. Thousands of us use them for a place to rest, for meetings and assignations, and even, at times, to act out life's dramas. They are soulless places, almost perfect for the tragic endings that sometimes seem to take on their own power and strength, playing out no matter what we truly want.

Martin Billings heads to Venezuela to locate a friend’s business partner. The man has slipped off the radar, and a lot of people want to find him. It’s easy enough to locate the man’s wife, vacationing on Margarita, but she knows nothing of the man’s whereabouts and cares even less. Several people do care where he is, however, including an ex-British spy named Simon, organized crime, and a mysterious foreign woman. None of it seems to have a thing to do with the reason he's there, but Martin is caught in the middle—again.

Story
Tropical heat, money, and lust. Henry Miller once said, "One's destination is never a place, but always a new way of seeing things." I think that’s why, on an extended vacation from my programming job to Cartagena, Colombia, I let a rich and chatty American expat tell me his story. I wasn’t impressed or even particularly interested - not until I met his beautiful assistant and heard rumors that the man had a dark secret. Even then I became intrigued, mostly, I suspect, because learning the truth was a way to get to know her.

Story
When you have no work and even the Tarot cards are saying bad things, it makes a road trip sound like fun. Three friends head out from LA to Las Vegas…the place where many things fall apart, including the foundation of the trio. Blame it on vagueness and a prostitute who is a Scorpio. Escaping without money means catching a ride with a Midwestern dentist. He's driving his Porsche all the way to a mountain without even a name, and the trip provides a certain amount of flatline insight. If the endless country music doesn't prove toxic, a return from the brink might be possible.

Deborah Harkness first introduced the world to Diana Bishop, an Oxford scholar and witch, and vampire geneticist Matthew de Clermont in A Discovery of Witches. Drawn to each other despite long-standing taboos, these two otherworldly beings found themselves at the center of a battle for a lost, enchanted manuscript known as Ashmole 782. Since then, they have fallen in love, traveled to Elizabethan England, dissolved the Covenant between the three species, and awoken the dark powers within Diana’s family line.

There is no bigger public health story now than the collapse in youth mental health. The numbers are terrifying and dominate our headlines. There has been much debate over how we got here, and what to do next, and bestselling author and social psychologist Jonathan Haidt is at the white-hot center of that discourse. “You like it darker? Fine, so do I,” writes Stephen King in the afterword to this magnificent new collection of twelve stories that delve into the darker part of life—both metaphorical and literal. King has, for half a century, been a master of the form, and these stories, about fate, mortality, luck, and the folds in reality where anything can happen, are as rich and riveting as his novels, both weighty in theme and a huge pleasure to digest.

Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....
