A Hobbit, mint Tolkien sok más írása, gyermekeinek szóló történetként indult. Először 1937-ben jelent meg és ma méltán világhírű gyermekmese. De több is ennél. Mindenkihez szól, akiben még ott él a gyermek. A világ, ahol játszódik, korai változata Középföldének. De már megtalálhatók benne Tolkien világának legfontosabb alkotóelemei; tündék, törpök, hobbitok, Gandalf a mágus, és felbukkan a Gyűrű is. Magában is elbűvölő, fantasztikus mese, mely egyben A Gyűrűk Urának előzménye.

Tolkien, en 1937, cette histoire, inventée par l'auteur pour ses propres enfants, raconte les aventures de Bilbo, un jeune hobbit, héros malgré lui en quête d'un trésor gardé par un dragon, en compagnie de nains et du magicien Gandalf. Devenu un classique de la littérature de jeunesse, ce texte a également enchanté des générations de tous âges.

C'est un dangereux héritage que Bilbo Bessac cède à son neveu avant de disparaître : l'anneau de pouvoir forgé par Sauron et dérobé jadis à Gollum. Le mage noir n'aspire qu'à retrouver son arme et sa puissance, et déjà ses cavaliers font route vers le Comté... This charming tale, peopled by a sand-sorcerer and a terrible dragon, by the king of the sea and the Man-in-the-Moon, went through several drafts over the years.
