They are feared, hated, hunted down, and destroyed....

....and yet they are mankind's last hope.

For a thousand years magic has been banished throughout the Five Kingdoms, and those caught wielding it are rounded up and taken to the White Tower. They are never heard from again.

Ty knows he's different. But when the bounty hunters arrive in the quiet city of Easthaven, his family reveals the shocking truth about his magical bloodline. And when an Ahvari witch hires a tribe of Northmen to capture him, Ty finds himself in the middle of a war he didn't know existed....

Armed with nothing but his will to survive, Ferrin attempts what no prisoner has ever accomplished and vows to escape the White Tower. His only hope is Rae, a gifted healer tasked with keeping the prisoners alive during the inquisitors' brutal interrogations. Will she be willing to risk her own life for that same chance of freedom....

Ayrion outworked his fellow soldiers for years to become captain of the guard. But his strength and valor alone won't be enough to stop the bloodthirsty creatures coming for his king. And when a sweeping number of the city's outcasts begin to mysteriously disappear, he realizes that the threat is closer than he knew....

War is coming, the likes of which hasn't been seen since the time of the Khul Hordes. How will humanity fight back when those with the ability to do so are being exterminated?

A Superb Work Of Epic Fantasy

This seems like the start of a series that could rival the likes of The Wheel Of Time. Yes, it's graphically violent. Yes, it deals with adult themes. It doesn't have gratuitous sex (or any sex?), but it does address trauma, abuse, and other themes that are best suited for mature audiences. Those who do bad things are portrayed as bad people. Those who struggle and make mistakes in pursuit of something good are portrayed as good people. Sometimes, the bad people win, and sometimes the good people win. The series feels like real life transposed into a fantasy setting--exactly how it should be.

Great escape.

This is why I love fantasy books. They take me into wonderous lands and ages that keep developing through the whole book often.
Wisehart is an amazing writer. he keeps me hanging on every developing event in his world.
The narration is equally spellbinding. Mr. Reynolds has a gifted voice. His cadence and tonality of each character are spectacular.
the only negative thing about this book is I cant imagine reading it in 2017 when released Nd having to wait 2 years to read the sequel. it was so good I downloaded the book 2 during the 45th chapter so I could ensure I would have seamless transition.

Great

Once I saw the narrator was Tim Gerard Reynolds I knew this book would be a good listen and it sure didn't disappoint. The authors words come alive through Tim's voice and I wouldn't catch myself stopped as if I were watching a movie. We'll, onto the next one...

Loved it

Can hardly wait for second book. A little formulaic but that is ok by me. Of course Mr Reynolds was excellent as usual.

Great Story! Fantastic World! Addicted instantly...

Immediately you are brought into the story with a scene that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I knew instantly that I was going to love it. The way Wisehart introduces the characters, which are many, each having their own story, he has a way of doing it that has you loving, or hating the person (or thing) within a few pages. He is able to immerse you in their world, in their accomplishments and heartaches within minutes! Such a cool world, such epic storytelling, and I can’t wait to read book 2. 🤗

Good Start!

A great performance of a good story. The characters are interesting and the multiple storylines are well developed. Slightly predictable fantasy fare, and some parts go on so long they become tedious. Overall, I certainly recommend it.

Intense

The story was gruesome at times, and it took a long time to lay the foundation for what’s next. But, overall it’s well written with good character building and a complex setting. Tim’s performance was fantastic as always.

Really enjoyed this

Very good story. I was sorry when it was over. Tim Gerard Reynolds is a great narrator and really brings the characters to life. I am looking forward to the next book in this series and have already purchased Micheal's newest book and will start it today.

Good Foundation

Mixed feelings on this book as it was a pretty disjointed story that will serve as a good foundation to a complex series. I am looking forward to more in depth characterization as well as more vivid descriptions to paint the author"s world. At this point, I'm missing a real empathy for the main characters and a vivid plot line because it reads more like a D & D manual.
