Publisher's summary

In The Thin Commandments Diet, Dr. Stephen Gullo lets you in on his unique weight-loss program that has a success rate that is many times higher than the national average. His two-part approach replaces willpower with strategy and deprivation dining with great-tasting gourmet fare.

In the first part, he reveals his strategy secrets, the 10 Thin Commandments, including:

  • Think historically, not just calorically: identify trigger foods that can undermine your weight loss.
  • Slips should teach you, not defeat you: uncover the "24-hour secret" and never gain weight from binging again.
  • The problem may be in the food, not in you: learn the strategies to take control of your favorite foods.

In the second part, Dr. Gullo outlines his simple diet which will put you on the shortest path to safe and rapid weight loss, without depriving you of the foods you love. He takes the guesswork out of dieting and offers a program that helps melt pounds away quickly and easily.

Pretty good, but...

If this book had great diet advice, I couldn't make it past the first 1/3 of the book. Too boring. The reader seemed to have a very bored tone, which made it difficult to listen to.

Solving the weight problem

The answers are all here. This is the best book on weight problems and all their solutions. I have listened to (and read) this book over and over. I pick up new things every time. I am optimistic of losing all the weight and keeping it off. Eating and exercising are only 2/3 of the equation. The missing piece is revealed here!

One of the BEST diet books ever!

I am surprised that this book is not more well known and popular - it absolutely should be! I have read countless diet books, and most deal with "eat this and not that" but don't delve deeply into what the real problem is with people who have a hard time losing weight and keeping it off - behaviors, habits, psychology and physiological factors that aren't obvious and make it more difficult.

I had already lost about 50 pounds by the time I came across this book and was struggling with the last 10. After a 12 year weight battle I finally felt like I come across some of the right habits and behavior changes and already was doing some of the things in this book that had proven to be very successful for me. So in a way, this book reframed some of this in a clearly defined way for me which was very helpful, but also offered several other suggestions that have been enormously helpful in shedding the rest of the weight and dealing with the maintenance aspect of weight loss, which really can be harder than losing the weight itself. After all, to quote the author "The best compliment you'll ever receive is - you've lost the weight... and kept it off!"

I recommend also purchasing a hardcopy version of this book to take notes. I think that this book is loaded with information that is crucial to weight loss success and everyone concerned with that should own it. I can see why the author is so successful in his practice, this stuff really works!!!

Life Changing

Imagine changing your entire psychological perspective about eating as the chapters roll out. You will be shocked and awed into understanding the roll of strategic mental preparation that THE THIN COMMANDMENTS DIET offers.
If you want to go to an arena of thought that is two steps behind the actual moment when you will actually eat, this audio book will take you there. You will start to understand and be given the opportunity to practice a huge variety of motivational strategies that are so authentic you want to reach out and hug the author for finally telling it like it is.
Of greatest consequence is the author's spotlight on YOUR FOOD HISTORY. Always overlooked by traditional plans, this emphasis on how you have responded to individual foods in your personal life is such an important clue to the road map to success.
I read that the author had a New York accent, but find that the autenticity and sincerity of this author reading his prescription for success is just what is needed to believe in this book like the bible.
You must listen to this work if you are ready for the finest, truest most effective mental rehearsal personal to you to precede your next meal.
Obviously I learned alot! Will relisten daily and will now lose twenty pounds.

Very helpful advice

I highly recommend this book. Gullo offers very helpful advice for maintaining healthy eating habits--specific strategies that really work. AND he does this without talking too much about FOOD. Diet books that talk constantly about what food to eat just make me hungry!

Gullo presents strategies that anyone can use to feel satisfied, keep favorite foods in our lives, and still control weight. Some of his strategies I've seen elsewhere, but many were new, at least to me. For example, his suggestions for "thinspeak" and "boxing in/boxing out" foods were worth the price of the book all by themselves.

I even liked the NY accent that a previous reviewer mentioned--Gullo's way of speaking gave a "no nonsense" tone to the book. This is the first audiobook I've purchased that I've listened to several times.

OK, but not as good as I had expected.

The premise of this book is good, common sense diet advice with a genetic twist to it all. I figured that I could listen to it in bed, but found that there is more that I needed to do to get the most out of the book. To be fair to the book, I needed to have a notebook to actually write down the "Commandments" as the author went through them.

One reason I gave it a 3/5 rating is that it's pretty much the same advice given by any other diet book...know your patterns, avoid certain foods, revamp/reinvent/find new comfort foods, don't skip meals, that kind of stuff.

However, the book does get into more physiology, and actually surprised me with info on taste bud research. It explains & gives how to steps about how we can deal with the fact that our patterns may very well be genetically programmed. That was good! That kind of stuff is woven into every chapter, and is refreshing.

Overall, I'd suggest having a notebook handy to jot down the list of Commandments if you'd like. It's also good for the neat tidbits that pop up in each chapter.

My main reason for the 3/5 rating was not the common sense stuff, but the author's voice, a thick New York accent, which made the book NOT an in bed listen. (I feel mean saying that, but it was a bit jolting...)

I'd still really suggest the book if you have some time to spend with it, focusing on not just the words, but the actual WORK you'll have to do with the good information provided. If you're not willing to take time to evaluate yourself, take notes, or do what the book suggests, then don't buy it. If you can take some time with it, then YES get the book :)

Very insightful helpful advice

This book, chapter after chapter addressed so accurately what a person with longstanding overeating problems experiences that it was very compelling. I believed his advice because he described the behaviors SO well. He provides very concrete strategies that are clearly effective --that doesn't mean he has easy answers. -And some of it I didn't want to hear (like there just may be some foods I have to cut out of my diet, period, or that keeping a food diary really is an effective tool for weight loss.) But when you feel like someone knows your problems and challenges so well --that kind of understanding, plus the MANY specific strategies for dealing with those challenges has made me really sit up and take notice. Well done!
