About this listen

Gretel has never had any time for sorcerers, considering them nothing more than show-offs with questionable fashion sense. It is with some reluctance and a deal of grumpiness, then, that she agrees to look into the matter of a murdered magician. All that is left of him is a grisly remnant, which the police quack confirms is the murdered man’s appendix. What has become of the rest of him is baffling the local constabulary, the Sorcerers’ Society, and, not least, the hapless trickster’s widow. As Gretel delves into the facts behind his disappearance she discovers no shortage of suspects. In fact, just about everyone she meets had reason for wanting the odious man dead. Her only clue points in one disturbing direction: the deep dark forest. So it is that Gretel, with a reluctant Hans as porter, must trek into the woods of her childhood trauma, braving all manner of discomforts and dangers – not least of which is a terrifying reminder of her past.©2017 P.J. Critic reviews

'The Sorcerer’s Appendix pokes fun at fairy tales and mysteries alike, but it’s also a serious whodunit.' (Historical Novel Society)
'Bestseller Brackston’s comic mystery series set in a Grimm fairy tales version of 18th-century Bavaria hits its stride with this often hilarious fourth entry. The wry humor is a delight.' (Publishers Weekly)
'An adventure that unrepentantly defies history and follows up a beloved tale with farce.' (Kirkus Reviews)

Love this series!

These books are really different than the run of the mill mysteries or romances. Each story has interesting characters that you would like to sit down and have a cup of ale with. Yes, you can figure the mystery out, but it's not about that. It's all about enjoying the lives of Hans, Gretel (yes, THAT,Gretel) and her Man.

Plus, the great narrator brings the books to life. I have gone from book to book. I dont know what I'll do when I get to the last one. I'll go back to the heavy post apocalyptic, zombie books....

Another home run! If you enjoy Shrek, or Tangled..

I’ve so enjoyed escaping into the world of PJ Brackstons Gretel and Hansel……

The world we live in today is so full of the self proclaimed moral authority, individuals and groups, movements and politicians who demand we all bow down and follow their declarations… it gets old.

So… it is nice to escape into a world where absurd and silly, intelligent and foolish, good and evil… and a lot of hilarious embarrassing situations all combine into something most of us can laugh at and yet, ….. something we can all connect emotionally to at one many levels. For a short time, we can immerse ourselves into Gretel, and Hansel world as they bumble through the mystery of the Sorcerer’ Appendix. Ive not been disappointed with this series.

Loved it!

I loved every minute of it! The narrator was awesome! The best part was when the general kissed her.

Marvelous Little Series

I love the humor and manner in which this series is told, and the rather unexpected circumstances that seem to earn Gretel her living. My only wish is there were more books in the series so we could continue to follow her penchant for misadventures and intriguing cases in which all is not as it seems.

Great fun!

This is a perfect diversion from COVID ennui - just a funny escape. Kate Reading is a joy as a narrator for this or any book.
