About this listen

The First Law has been revealed.

Having found the truth, Lu Jie is set out on a path against the very heavens. Now exiled from the sect and under the Lord of the Seventh Peak, he must branch out into his own, creating the foundations of a new era starting from Taizhou. But winter is fast approaching. And with it, come demonic beasts. Lu Jie’s enemies lurk in the shadows, scheming to bring him down, all the while a powerful and old foe is rising from deep beneath the earth. To win this time, he will need to understand the power that lurks within the depth of his spirits.

Book two of an epic Xianxia Cultivation series perfect for fans of Beware of Chicken and Cradle. The series features weak-to-strong power progression, a light scientific approach to magic, tons of alchemy, spirit beast companions, and so much more.

Great... until the end

This series continues to be a pretty unique and intense take on an isekai cultivation story. Good narration, solid writing, decent characters. The story is moving a bit too fast here, but Book 2 would have been a 5/5 if not for the last 2 hours. Without getting into spoilers, the end ranges between convoluted to outright stupid (Power of Friendship... ffs). Very rapid power scaling then arbitrary nerfs for his final duel, followed by more rapid power growth. There a lot of underlying good here and I'm very interested in seeing him building his village, mix old tech and magic, and investigate the mystery of the heavens. Hope it goes back to being a more even paced story in book 3.

Dropped Characters

While the story expands upon the lore set innthebfirst book, it flat out abandons 2 of its main cast. None of his spirit beasts with the exception of Twilight have any time devoted to them, abd Labby the dutagonist who tried so hard to be her Masters Assistent, barely even shows up, and then only to inform people she WONT be showing up for certain important scenes. Because of the arc she went through in the first book her abandonment in favor of two charactera who used to be more minor in thebstory but quickly skyrocket to replace her (Zhang and Ying) feels a bit cruel.

Fun narrator and engaging plot

The protagonist is fun and not self important. Plot moves along quickly. Supporting characters have their own wants and dreams. Fun and advancing world building. No wallowing is done by any of the main cast for too long.

Great book

This is a really good book and even better series. I’m really looking forward to the next book series. The author does a great job of the progression of the main characters. Not too fast but fast enough to keep me interested.

Another winner. If you liked the first book, this is more of the same.

And the Narration is Fantastic! I meant to mention that in my review of the first book, so it should count double. I'm also really tempted to leave a fake spoiler, like: I was really surprised when the ship sank and all the people from the first book perished... Or something. But I won't. I will say to read the first book first.

Whiplash

This book feels much more rushed than the first. it's impossible to truly track the MC's progress, as his abilities will skyrocket and immediately plumet just as quickly. there is much less focus on Labby and the other spirit beasts from the last book. It feels a lot less like an alchemist trying to spread knowledge and more like a traditional XianXia novel and I feel like the story suffers for it. It's still decent, but not what I was looking for in this series. I'm hoping the next book does better.

After waiting forever

This was a pretty good continuation. Who knew the power of friendship was a valid cultivation path.

Very entertaining

Overall very enjoyable. My biggest complaint is that for whatever reason every time I hear the alchemy grenades referred to as “drugnades” I wince at how wrong it sounds. It’s like saying dynamite is made from drugs because it has nitroglycerine in it… a drugsplosive.
