Publisher's summary

Trust no one. Especially your neighbors.

Rachel Drake is on the run from the man who killed her husband. She never leaves her safe haven in an anonymous doorman building, until one night a phone call sends her running. On her way to the garage, she is murdered in the elevator. But her story doesn't end there.

She finds herself in the afterlife, tethered to her death spot, her reach tied to the adjacent apartments. As she rides the elevator up and down, the lives of the residents intertwine. Every one of them has a dark secret. An aging trophy wife whose husband strays. A surgeon guarding a locked room. A TV medium who may be a fraud. An ordinary man with a mysterious hobby. Compelled to spend eternity observing her neighbors, she realizes that any one of them could be her killer. And then, her best friend shows up to investigate her murder.

Pleasantly surprised

What a unique and interesting story, plot, the twists. Normally I have things figured out entirely.
This seemed to cover a great deal of ppl, giving each closure. That said I still wish I knew more about a few characters. Where they would end up, how their lives would pick up there after. I was

For a first novel the author did fantastic. Earnestly I was a tad stand off’esk…
Really glad I rolled the dice and took a chance on a writer I didn’t know.

I will be reading whatever she comes out with next for sure.

Great!!

Great story, kept me hooked until the end!! The narrator did a fantastic job!! Best of all, no unnecessary explicit sex scenes (why do authors do that? I’m reading a mystery not 50 Shades!! 🙄)
Absolutely 100% recommend this book!

Unique Compulsory Debut. Paranormal Thriller

"It was never a ghost that haunted me. It was something much more malevolent...But I don't care. The worst has already happened. My husband is dead."

Sadly there is much worse to happen to Rachel after her husband's murder in the extremely unique paranormal thriller The Ghosts of Thorwald Place by debut author Helen Power.

Rachel is dead. Not a spoiler. At the very beginning of this compulsory detailed novel we experience her vividly described brutal murder in her building's elevator. She doesn't know who killed her. She only felt the hands and knife slit her throat. Now she's trapped in the elevator only able to adventure out on the floors where it may stop.

As her best friend and brother in law investigates her and her husband's murders, Rachel discovers the dark secrets of her neighbors from a battered wife, a wife slowly poisoning her husband, a possibly phony TV psychic, a creepy over attentive building concierge and a killer...or two.

Then there are the other ghosts in the building like the little girl with no eyes, a man that seems in between life and death and the shadowy figure that made my skin crawl.

This story is told through Rachel when she is alive and even more brilliantly when she is dead. Her fear, confusion, exhaustion (her observation about missing sleeping as a ghost was a revelation), and her frustration at not being able to help those in danger is so descriptively emphatic and realistic.

I had a sneaky suspicion about the killer and was hoping I was wrong because they were growing on me but alas my thriller sense was correct.

The writer had a dream she was a ghost stuck in an elevator and it became the genesis for this all encompassing ghost story whose last few words melted my heart.
