About this listen

Donald Ray “Hokey” Busby has a bit of the devil in him, but nobody thought he’d kill his best friend, Harry “Fats” Shell. Yet, one night on the Walker family farm, Hokey brutally shoots Fats down. Hours later, Hokey is found dying in a pool of blood from a single shotgun blast.

The Walkers feared more bloodshed would come as family and friends gathered for the shocking double funeral of the murderer and victim and two preachers, like courtroom lawyers, vied for supremacy; one for God’s wrath, one for God’s mercy as a mother’s love, draped in grief, cried out.

Author Harold G. Walker recounts the life and times of growing up on a small cotton farm in Southeastern Missouri. Returning to the terrifying events of December 1957, he attempts to answer the questions that still haunt him today. Why did Hokey kill Fats? And more puzzling, was Hokey’s death an accidental suicide or murderous revenge?

A compelling glimpse of Americans

A story of life and death on The Floodways of Southeast Missouri. Simplicity and hard work against the fabric of strong family ties.

Wow unexpectedly moving.

Great book. Different than other true crime, as you’ll see, but also a bit more interesting than regular true crime. Story told by the author’s research and his memories as a 12 yr old. Very interesting touch of Americana. Though for some reason, this one gave me nightmares, it’s not that scary. I was just a bit more captured by it.

a must read

I enjoyed every moment. The characters, the details of the area. I am from the area and tried to imagine what it was like back then as the story was being told. My mothers family (laden) moved from the walker farm before the murder took place.
