Almost always when we think of Ghost Stories, we first think of those written by the Victorians. Whatever the reasons given or proffered the reality and known facts are that if you want a really good ghost story to bring that edge of chill, that foreboding of dread, that feeling that in an empty house we are not quite alone and that sometimes the sharp, sheer shock of what just happened is upon us then look no further than ‘The Victorian Ghost Story’ for your listening pleasure.

Lettice Galbraith is yet another of those mysterious women of British literature of whom little was recorded. Lizzie Susan Gibson was born on the 27th January 1859 in Kingston-Upon-Hull in Yorkshire into a comfortable middle-class family. In 1885 she published her first story anonymously and her pseudonym ‘Lettice Galbraith’ only appeared from late 1892. Although her canon of works is small, she mainly achieved her reputation on a single volume of ghost and supernatural stories entitled ‘New Ghost Stories’.

Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin was born on the 1st July, 1804, in Paris, France, to an unconventional family who were from different classes—her father being from noble lineage whilst her mother from rather more modest origins. Her writing, a blend of romance and realism, had an effortless spontaneity which neither sacrificed style or form and tackled the complexities of politics, society, and gender.

Marie Adelaide Elizabeth Rayner Lowndes (née Belloc) was born in 1868. She had a distinguished and prolific literary career and 4 of her works were adapted (some several times) for film. She died in 1947.

Amy Levy was born in London, England in 1861, the second of seven in a fairly wealthy Anglo-Jewish family. The children of the family read and participated in secular literary activities becoming firmly integrated into Victorian life. Her first novel Romance of a Shop, written in 1888 is based on four sisters who experience the pleasures and hardships of running a business in London during the 1880s. This was followed by Reuben Sachs (also 1888) and concerned with Jewish identity and mores in the England of her time and therefore somewhat controversial);

Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette more usually known as simply ‘Colette’, was born in 1873. Her most famous work is ‘Gigi’. An author, a woman of letters, a mime, an actress, and journalist and a celebrity example the wide range of her many talents. She died in 1954.

Tatiana Schepkina-Kupernik was born in 1874. In her literary career she was a poet, playwright, and short story writer. She died in 1952.

David Herbert Lawrence was born on the 11th September 1885 in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, a coal mining town where the reality of a harsh life was only useful as experiences for future literary works. Lawrence’s first efforts were poems, short stories and a draft of ‘The White Peacock’. Moving to London and a teaching position in Croydon his writing attracted the attention of Ford Madox Ford, editor of The English Review, and he commissioned him to write ‘Odour of Chrysanthemums’. Wanting to write full-time he now began work on what would become ‘Sons and Lovers'.

Elinor Sutherland was born on the 17th October 1864 in Saint Helier, Jersey, in the Channel Islands. Her literary style was very successful and, although by modern standards would be called ‘romance’, in those days it was considered racy and erotic fiction. She coined the first use of the word the ‘It girl’. In the 1920’s Glyn went to Hollywood, for the filming of her novel ‘The Great Moment’. Thereafter she was engaged to write stories and screenplays and became one of the most famous and successful women screenwriters of the era.

Undoubtedly a full life would have given the world a very gifted literary force.

Ulric Evan Daubeny born in 1888 published only a single collection of short supernatural fiction; ‘The Elemental’. It’s stand out piece was 'The Sumach'. He died in 1922.

Richard Bernard Heldmann was born on 12th October 1857, in St Johns Wood, North London. By his early 20’s Heldmann began publishing fiction for the myriad magazine publications that had sprung up and were eager for good well-written content. Marsh was a prolific writer and wrote almost 80 volumes of fiction as well as many short stories, across many genres from horror and crime to romance and humour. His unusual characters, plotting devices and other literary developments have identified his legacy as one of the best British writers of his time.

Edith Nesbit was born on the 15th August 1858 in Kennington, then part of Surrey. Due to the health issues and tuberculosis of her sister Mary, Nesbit’s early life was one of constant changes of house both in England and on the continent. At age 17, Nesbit met Hubert Bland and they married three years later. They also edited the Society's journal; ‘Today’. Nesbit was an active lecturer and prolific writer on socialism during those years but gradually her work for them dwindled as her career as a children’s writer grew.

Bithia Mary Sheppard was born in Kilgefin, County Roscommon, Ireland, the only daughter of an Anglican Church of Ireland rector. She was educated at Rockferry, Cheshire and in Tours, France. Bithia only began writing at the age of 33 and in her life wrote 42 novels and 7 volumes of short stories. Within her short story creations are much anthologized ghost, supernatural and macabre tales. Many of her novels reveal a side of Empire that is undeniably of its time and a fine example of both talent and observation.
