I det gamle Møllehus hersker en trykket stemning. Enken Birthe Jervelund har giftet sig med sin afdøde mands faetter, og Niels Jervelund, hvis vaesen udadtil ellers kan vaere charmerende, har vist sig at vaere en slet hustyran. Kun Birthes unge datter, Ingeborg, har vovet at gå imod sin stedfar, og er derfor blevet sendt bort til en slaegtning på Sjaelland. Men nu er Ingeborg blevet myndig, og Niels aner ikke sine levende råd. For han har hersket enerådigt over den gamle mølle, men møllen tilhører Ingeborg, og nu vil hun tage den i besiddelse. Den 15-årige Martin er enearving til godset Naesbygaard, hvor han bor sammen med sin bedstefar, den gamle Martin. På overfladen ånder alt lutter idyl, men mørke sager rører på sig i den lille landsby ved godset. Fru Helenes søn, Torben, har endnu ikke opgivet at få fjernet den unge Martin og derved selv blive arving til godset. Martin har knyttet et naert venskab til den jaevnaldrende Elice, der bor sammen med sin stedfar, byens smed, som er kendt som en religiøs og godhjertet mand. Som 12-årig bliver den foraeldreløse Jens Bro sendt til Chresten Bonde og hans kone, Karen, på Pilegården. Chresten tilhører den gamle bondeaet, og hans liv er bundet op i alle de gamle, stolte traditioner, der hører bondemaendene til. Hans kone derimod er ivrig tilhaenger af grundtvigianismen, og det kommer til brydninger mellem de to. Jens kommer hurtigt til at holde af livet på bondegården, men hans hjerte laenges efter noget andet: Han vil vaere købmand som sin bedstefar og genvinde den gamle mands plads i samfundet. Købmand Thomas Knudsen har laenge fulgt sin ven Olsens råd, men denne har onde bagtanker. Thomas lider endvidere af et knust hjerte, for Konsul Mule har naegtet ham sin datter, Ingeborg. Også Jens har hjertekvaler, for hjemme går den smukke Anna Lise, Chrestens datter, og venter på ham.

Efter ni år i Amerika vender Jakob Ørli hjem til den lille søstad, han voksede op i.
