Da Brancaleone, il paese sullo Ionio dove è confinato dall'agosto del '35 al marzo '36, Pavese scrive compulsivamente alla sorella per lenire la distanza e la solitudine. Anche in questo caso le lettere diventano occasioni letterarie per mimare i grandi autori classici (la grecità si affaccia dal dialogo fitto con il Mediterraneo calabrese) e usare la scrittura come specchio e guida.
