In den nächsten Jahren unternahm er mehrere Expeditionen nach Timbuktu und erreichte als erster Europäer die Oase Tafilalet. Im Mai 1865 versuchte er von Tripolis aus die Sahara zu durchqueren, was ihm mit einigen Umwegen auch gelang. So musste er schon in Ghadames die Route wegen feindlicher Tuareg ändern und reiste stattdessen über Murzuk im Fessan zum Tschadsee.
