About this listen

The secrets buried below can make him a Hero above... if he can find them.

Milo lives in a steel cave within a man-made mountain of steel and concrete. He spends his days repairing the machinery that keeps the habitat livable and tinkering with the prosthetics that help his twisted body move about through the small tunnels and air shafts that are his world.

He's as much a piece of discarded machinery as the equipment he keeps running. An escaped lab experiment living in a hole.

Given a chance at being someone different, will he become a hero and live in the sunlight? The light beckons, but there are secrets buried in the ground. Ancient mysteries left by races that delved deep and stayed below.

Maybe only a tunnel rat can discover them...

Don't miss the start of this unique spin on LitRPG featuring an unusual MC you can't help but root for. Featuring plenty of humor, action, thievery, ninja abilities, a detailed world and System, science skills, magic tinkering, item invention, and more originality than you can shake a rat tail at!

I've loved reading Walrusking's "The butcher of Gadobhra" story on Royal Road that plays in the same world, but I hadn't gotten to reading "Tunnel Rat". When the author announced they had just published a story on Audible I gave it a shot.

I loved to story. It has a much smaller cast than TBOG, but it also has some really imaginative arcs that make you smile because they show over and over again how smarts overcome the oppression of structures and characters of power. If you are looking for a fun story about a character with an unrelenting optimism that outsmarts a dystopian world. you will love this story.

The narration irked me a bit at first, but turning the speed to 1.05 or 1.10 scratched the itch.

Optimistic fun story with a dash of absurd realism, about a young engineer that outsmarts a distopian world

i liked the premise of a sci-fi world in which the MC seeks escape into a fantasy game, and how both worlds influence each other. Milo is a smart and inventive character with some physical limitations that force him to think outside the "hero box."
good story, and of course, Garret Michael Brown does his usual fantastic job with the audio. looking forward to book 2!

I mostly listen to books, but anyways, I thought this was a fun and enjoyable read.
I really like the main character Milo and how he grows and thinks. This is a LitRPG and as such the character's states are stated throughout the story. I personally fine it is done more often then necessary and disruptive to story, but this is from a 69yr old who doesn't play any RPG games, so take that as you may. Narrator does a good job with the various characters voices and the entire storyline. Looking forward to the next in this Series.

A Great Listen

Been waiting for an audiobook of tunnel rat for a long time! This is a nice little introduction to the main character and a brief glimpse of the world building, Milo reminds me a bit of Bean from Enders game gone mad scientist. Can’t wait for the the next books where we get to see more of the gods in the game (and the one outside of course)

Milo!

So I read tunnel rat on royal road and have been enchanted the walrus kings work ever since. They do a great job of making both the real world and game world engaging. Milo has plot threads tying him to both world and they mix over pretty well. The reader did a great job with the narration, although the voices are of course completely different from what I imagined when reading, most were pleasantly new interpretations that I enjoyed.

Best VR novel Ive ever read.

I had no expectations for this book, one way or the other. Aethon was doing a code give away and I received this book through that promotion.

However, my review is not influenced by their largesse but the freebie was appreciated.

This was a pretty unique VRMMORPG style game/story and the MC is, well, a tunnel rat.

The stats are present but not overly intrusive, There's monsters and fights and loot and standard LitRpg stuff but it's done well. There is drama and tension on both sides of the MC's worlds, VR and RL, but it's well done and the writer keeps the story moving forward and the characters interactions satisfying and interesting.

The greater compliment I can give a writer is by buying the next book in the series. I enjoyed book 1 and will definitely purchase the next book. Cheers

Surprisingly good!

I enjoyed the class and story in the book. I also like how the MC isn't accidentally perfect in everything they touch and there is a reasonable explanation for his certain advantages. All in all I enjoyed this book and look forward to the next one!

A great standout
