Publisher's summary

All new from bestselling psychological thriller writer Keri Beevis

When you’re a kid, you imagine monsters to have horns and fangs. That they hide under the bed or in the wardrobe. And you believe they can only come after you when it’s dark.

You don’t expect them to look like everyday people or that they may be someone you already know…

The summer in question started out with hot, fun-filled days and new friendships.

We had just turned thirteen and had our whole lives ahead of us.

But that was before her....

Before we became known as the Hixton Five and our lives become defined by one night.

It’s hard to believe twenty years have passed since she was locked away.

But now she’s free and strange things have started to happen.

When I close my eyes, the creeping anxiety and fear is overwhelming and all too real.

Because the monster is back, and I know she has a score to settle with us.

Lovely Twist Ending

I will preface with saying there are some serious TW for this book. Abuse, physical, mental and sexual. At times it was very hard to read/listen too. But it was necessary for the storyline. This is my first book by this author and I will definitely look for more by them. The book kept me on the edge of my seat second guessing everything and everyone. It was lovely! I even had to take a few breaks because of how intense it was at time. The narrator did an absolutely phenomenal job, as always. Her voice acting skills really added to the suspense. She made so many of the scenes exceptionally more intense.

Narrator is awesome!

I love Imogen Church so that helped me get through this book. The story was interesting enough for me to keep listening but there were a lot of things that made me sigh in disbelief or that did not make sense. Overall it was an okay listen.

Expected more

After reading all the positive reviews, I expected to get tripped and tricked so I prepared myself for many twists and turns. Sadly, no I had it figure it out halfway through the book. No twists for me. I was so surprised when the book ended. I expected so much more to come out and surprise me, but it never happened. Even when a main character’s big secret was revealed at the end, it was rather anti-climatic in my opinion. I was walking my dogs when the book ended and I spoke aloud, “wait, that’s it?!” I was so sure,a big twist was still waiting for me. But no surprises ever came. The book just ended. The saving grace for this thriller is that the reader. She is absolutely fantastic!! She is what kept me hooked!! I’d go as far to say she’s just about the best reader I have ever listened to in all of these hundreds of audible books I’vefinished. When she does a guy’s voice, she does more than just make her voice lower. She changes it and it’s just amazing. Different voices for different male characters too. She’s a pro!!!

Wow!

I haven't read/listened to a good psychological thriller in a long time until this one. just when I thought I had it figured out, there would be another twist. I really enjoyed this book and the story. Bravo!

A total package.

This book has it all.It is well written. While the plot is a little over the top, it is believable and the characters are well developed. The narration is excellent. Also a little too long, but altogether a very good listen,

good.. but...

good story.. but the narrator was HORRIBLE. Her voices.. were awful and she whispers constantly then in the same sentence will SCREAM something out. so constant up and down on my volume and anger because she screamed. I cannot stand high pitched whining for girls and over exaggerated men's voices. pretty awful. I'm going to write her name down so I don't have to hear another book read by her.

Freakin’ Dark

I find it hard to say I liked a book with a main plot point about child abuse but… this was freaking good. It was scary and really makes you think about the people watching your children. There were so many intertwined plot lines but it wasn’t hard to follow. I enjoyed the fast-paced storytelling and character development. It really kept you guessing. The epilogue was perfect.

Unexpected twists, and turns to the very end

The character development and storyline excellent keeping you guessing right to the very end. The narration is where the book fell short for me. Many of the female characters’ voices were, in my opinion, quite cringe, worthy, annoying to the point of being like nails going down a chalkboard. One quick, editor’s note. About a third of the way through the book, the narrated chapter numbers fell one short of the type written to the very end.

The narrator is beyond talented!

The story & the twist & turns were fantastic, but Imogen Church was out of this world. The talent it takes to voice several characters but especially evil characters that send a chill down the listener’s spine is truly special & Imogen exceeded all expectations.
