About this listen
Half Cherokee and Civil War veteran Captain Skylar Garret returns to the home of Phillip Garret, his white father, seeking an inheritance that he believes to have belonged to his late mother. Intertwined now into the lives of his three half-brothers - one a vocal atheist, one an aspiring minister, and the other a black slave who Phillip Garret doesn't claim - Skylar finds himself in more than a quarrel for money. He's in the middle of a love triangle with his own father, and ultimately on trial for patricide. Will Skylar Garret be the next hanging from Judge Parker's court?

Story
It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of dos and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job - and don't ever associate with loose women. The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail.

Sydney Henderson is a truly great man. As a young man, Sydney, believing he has accidentally killed a friend, makes a pact with God, promising never to harm another if the boy's life is spared. In the years that follow, the almost pathologically gentle Sydney holds true to his promise - at terrible cost to himself and his family. Stunningly beautiful and haunting, scenes from this magisterial novel will remain etched in the mind forever.

Story
This acclaimed new translation of Dostoyevsky's 'psychological record of a crime' gives his dark masterpiece of murder and pursuit a renewed vitality, expressing its jagged, staccato urgency and fevered atmosphere as never before. Raskolnikov, a destitute and desperate former student, wanders alone through the slums of St. Petersburg, deliriously imagining himself above society's laws. But when he commits a random murder, only suffering ensues.

Somewhat Different From His Other Book But Good
THE BROTHERS was a pretty good book by the late ROBERT J. CONLEY. I listened to another of his published works WALKING THE TRAIL and both are consistent with the western/Native American theme. This book was about brothers with different mothers who didn't necessarily get along and the father was a miser of sorts. I think the main protagonist was Skylar.
I liked the way the book was written. Also, one of my favorite supporting characters was the Indian Chief. There were a few times I got confused about the brothers but all in all this didn't take away from a good family saga with some nice twists.
WILLIAM L. STURDEVANT did an outstanding job narrating the story. He has a wide range of dialects and his Native American is perfect. I feel he's a great asset to these stories and is a wonderful voice in this genre. I hope more of these historical fictions are published in audio format. These are real treasures.
