About this listen

First in the best-selling series the McCabes.

The story of a family building a ranch in the rugged wilderness of post-Civil War Montana, and of a young man seeking his family and his destiny. If you liked the movie Open Range or the TV shows Big Valley and Lancer, or the novels of Louis L'Amour and Ralph Compton, then this might be for you.

The story was very touching. J Rodney Turner is a very good narrator. He makes the story come alive.

Nice long western to listen to while traveling.
The story was though with well developed characters but oh so wordy.

Highly verbose

I love the entire series. I've been looking for a good solid western series with decent narration and this one goes above and beyond my expectations. The narration is gritty, raw, and that deep sexy gravilly voice that I love served up with my westerns. Very smooth narration.
I particularly love this first book and the rich characters and histories it introduces to the audience.
I don't think romance is this authors strong suit, but I don't need much romance in my westerns - the way they live and the rich descriptions of the landscapes is enough romance for me with a western. Plenty of positive things about this series/book - like all series there are a couple of so/so books - but sometimes I think that has to do with the characters we have come to like and which ones we really aren't invested in that sways our interest in a book within a series. But Brad Dennison really has a talent for bringing characters to life with rich personalities. By the time I got to Johnnie McCabe in the series I was really pleased with the author's improvement in character interaction and it reminded me a little of Larry McMurtry - which is a HUGE compliment.
Highly recommend this series.

The overall storyline and performance we good but it seams like this could’ve been done in about 25% less time.

Good Story But…

Rugged cowboy excitement and the moments of tenderness kept me intrigued with the storyline. I enjoyed this book very much.

If you liked the Bonanza series, and other western TV shows, you will most likely love this book. Not as much gore as in other western series, much more interesting - full of drama but plenty of knuckle brawling, as well as knife and gun fights. But it was, to me, more about relationships in the old west. Such a pleasure to hear, and more so with J. Rodney Turner narrating.

Loved the book and story!

The book is well written and, the narration is perfect for a western. Turners low voice is the best for westerns. Loved the characters and, it’s easy to get sucked into the story.

Interesting story
