About this listen

Beneath the soul of a chef, lies the heart of a witch.

Zelda Hawkins came to Manhattan to make sandwiches, not spells—but when a mysterious vampire offers free rent on her family’s old restaurant in exchange for repairing a magical mirror, Zelda’s plans are flipped like a hot grilled cheese.

With the help of a ridiculous rescue poodle, a mind-reading fire witch, a smoldering ex-boyfriend, and a hot Brooklyn hipster helping with the renovation, Zelda must use the magic she inherited from her grandmother to enter a world of witches, vampires, and fae, where masks and mirrors are only the beginning… and the stakes are higher than New York prices.

I liked it, great narrator.

This isn’t my usual kind of book to listen to but I listened to it for a reading challenge and I’m not sorry that I did. The characters were interesting and the story engaging. Hollie Jackson did a great job performing this story. Her voices for the different characters were easy to distinguish and her vocal inflections were on point. One of my favorite characters was Jester, Zelda’s rescue Poodle. Rescue dogs are the best and so are Poodles. (I might be a bit biased because I had a wonderful rescue Poodle of my own for 16 years. 🥰)

A Delightful Cozy Mystery!

I completely fell in love with this book by chapter 6. I originally received a review copy from NetGalley, but had to buy the audiobook and Kindle version. I was quickly drawn into the story and even stayed up well past my bedtime to finish it. The writing is absolutely fabulous. The world building well done. Zelda and her friends are a hoot. I'm looking forward to the next book.

Cozy Urban Fantasy with a Midlife Twist

So much fun! Forty-something Zelda returns to Manhattan to reopen her family's old restaurant and the magical beings practically start popping out of the woodwork. You have vampires, witches, and fae, each with their own secrets and hangouts. Zelda is quickly drawn into a magical conflict between the vampires and must use all of her wits and magic to best the villain. She makes new allies and friendships, while also keeping it flirty (on her own terms!) with the two leading men. I like how there's a touch of romantic fun but the story isn't all romance.

There's a sequel named Masks and Mirrors. Can't wait to see what happens next, as this is a continuing story.

If you like urban fantasy, cozy mysteries, paranormal romance, or paranormal women's fiction, you'll love Spells and Sandwiches!
