About this listen

Two things are impossible to walk away from: death and vintage clothing. Trust me. I've tried.

Moving across the country and opening a costume shop was supposed to be my chance for a normal life. What I wanted was a fresh start, one where the biggest danger would be a carelessly wielded sewing needle.

What I ended up with was a trail of dead bodies, a power I didn't ask for, and a host of enemies with ties to my twin sister's decade-old murder. Throw in a stony-eyed enforcer I can't seem to shake and a new goat shifter BFF, and I'm knee deep in trouble.

Walking away from this alive is going to require more than my wicked fashion sense. To survive, I'll have to embrace the legacy I've spent most of my life running from.

The Kali James series features a reluctant necromancer who finds herself in a world of witches, werewolves, vampires, and ghosts. If you like your urban fantasy with quirky characters, found family, a side of supernatural mystery, and a dose of slow-burn romance, this is the series for you.

great story!

I really liked the development of the protagonist. She was very relatable and human, and seeing her development into what she became was fascinating. I also loved her relationships with the people surrounding her, basically the people that became her family by choice. All in all it was a great urban fantasy story. I highly recommend it.

the people in the books

I really liked the novel how it grew into more and more. Never disappointing.Great, ooh the way it grew in both the people and the plot.

Kali and Riley are the perfect Chaos!

I absolutely love how this series follows Kali on her own journey of self-discovery and trying to solve the mystery of her sister's death, while at the same time tying in with Riley's series. It's fun to see the different POV for events like the paintball match or the "morning after" at Max's house, but also have a whole different story of Kali's own. The narrator is a delight, as usual.

Delightful

Loved every minute! Charming, exciting, and oh so fun. I bought the books to listen to on my drive to/from work, but I was soon so hooked I was listening to it all the time (making dinner, doing yard work, etc.) Highly recommend.

Solid Listen

Solid storyline and listen. Nothing terribly annoying. Worth the credit for a month’s worth of driving time filled.

Rigid with an ok story if you can ignore plot holes

I listened to two books. Great job by the reader. I haven't read other books by the writer but I would be surprised if these weren't her first published books. The entire first person narrative feels like the character is writing the book. There isn't an ounce of space for us to see how the character feels. It's like reading a police statement. If Jack's laptop was stolen in the first 1/4 how the hell did Kali get it in the last 1/4 of the book? Why was Jack in the second book at all? Why the hell did Riley suddenly decide she needed to go cave diving. I'll say this, it was interesting enough of a plot that I needed to know what happened. Ultimately, I didn't finish the series. The lack of a hook in the second and third book was too much to get past. I know this seems like a one star review but honestly... I've read worse so, 3 it is.
