A coming-of-age tale for the young and naïve 17-year-old Catherine Morland, Northanger Abbey takes a decidedly comical look at themes of class, family, love and literature. Revelling in the sensationalist - and extremely popular - Gothic fiction of her day, the story follows Catherine out of Bath to the lofty manor of the Tilneys, where her overactive imagination gets to work constructing an absurd and melodramatic explanation for the death of Mrs Tilney, which threatens to jeopardise her newly forged friendships.

This is Jane Austen's lighthearted lesson in what you get for reading too many gothic novels. It is a mark of the astonishing talent of the woman, however, that even a flippant swipe at the trashy reading of the day turned out to be an elegant if extremely funny classic. Catherine Morland is another one of those Austen girls who, in spite of her gloriously ironic portrait as a romantic heroine in training, ends up being someone whose story you'd follow to the end of the world, or at least until the end of the book.

I wish for more stars to fill in
Every Jane Austin is my favorite. I go back to listen to each repeatedly. I must admit I did not adequately appreciate the wry humor of Northanger Abbey until listening to this production. It may now be my favorite.

The freaking-out inner-voice
Emma Thompson's narration of Catherine's wild thoughts as she's freaking-out in Northanger Abbey is perfect. In fact, after hearing this version, it will be difficult for my freaking-out inner-voice to not be Emma Thompson's. I'm quite okay with that, actually.

Great dramatization
As always, the full book is better, but they got the gist very well. This is my favorite lesser known Austen novel and the dramatization did not disappoint.

I loved it!!
I’m so glad some of the more finicky reviews didn’t deter me from listening to this. I thought everyone did a good job, John Thorp’s character literally made me laugh out loud. I wasn’t put off by the added background noise at all, listening to the audio book via headphones, the background really added a nice touch to the whole experience. I would definitely recommend this!

Great casting. Nice take on Henry. Father northanger is not overacted I am relieved to report. Nice comic tone on the overactive imagination of Katherine. I liked it.💚
