About this listen

Praised as a "ruthless descendant of Holmes", agent Pendergast has become one of crime fiction's most endearing characters. His greatest enemy is one who has stalked him all of his life, his cunning and diabolical brother Diogenes. And Diogenes has thrown down the gauntlet. Now, several of the people closest to Pendergast are viciously murdered, and Pendergast is framed for the deeds. On the run from federal authorities, with only the help of his old friend NYPD Lieutenant Vincent D'Agosta, Pendergast must stop his brother. But how can he stop a man that is his intellectual equal, one who has had 20 years to plan the world's most horrendous crime?©2005 Splendide Mendax, Inc. and Lincoln Child. All Rights Reserved. Diogenes is back and he has a score to settle

Dance of Death is a fast-paced thriller that never lets up and keeps the reader turning pages, so to speak.

Pendergast is back, but this time his evil brother is out to finally extract his revenge on the FBI Agent. Targeting those close to Pendergast (friends and colleagues), the evil Diogenese embarks on a quest to methodically murder them while framing Pendergast and while planning on carrying out the "perfect" crime.

I can't say more without giving away important plot points, but I will say "read this book!" You will not be disappointed.

Another Pendergast

Ticked me off that I had to opt for the abridged version to enjoy Rene Auberjonois' wonderful portrayal of Pendergast. Just couldn't handle Scott Brick's. For a reason that escapes me, so many listeners think Brick has hung the moon. Sure, he's a good reader, but he pales in comparison to Mr. Auberjonois. In addition, I just completed all the Pendergast stories by going back to listen to Reliquary read by Dick Hill, who's a fine reader but utterly ill-equipped to portray Pendergast. Despite Mr. Hill's talent, he was colossally miscast. Perhaps, it was because Reliquary was among the first Pendergast entries and a suitable reader had yet to be discovered. Neither Hill, nor Brick have the chops to render the southern gentlemanly flair of Pendergast. That said, Jefferson Mays delivered an excellent portrayal for Crooked River.

Superb

I've been reading these guys since Relic. This was not a disappointment. I listened to it in two days.

Good listen

Would you try another book from Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child and/or Rene Auberjonois?

Yes, but I am a fan of A X L Pendergast.

If you’ve listened to books by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child before, how does this one compare?

A good listen, not the best, but not bad. Relic was my favourite.

Have you listened to any of Rene Auberjonois’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Always consistently good.

Could you see Dance of Death being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

No, Relic would be good though.

good for the abridged version

I was surprised that the story did not suffer to much being abridged. It's not as good as other Pendacast stories as its missing the more super natural accepts of other stories but its still very good.

Not as good as Brimstone.

Would you try another book from Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child and/or Rene Auberjonois?

Preston and Child, absolutely; Mr Auberjonois, maybe.

Who was your favorite character and why?

No favourite.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Rene Auberjonois?

I'm undecided. Obviously if I wanted to listen to the book badly enough, I would tolerate
Mr Auberjonois's delivery, but there are better narrators out there.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

No.

Any additional comments?

The story did hold my attention, but I felt it was let down a little by the narration. I understand Scott Brick is in high demand, but I thought he brought something special to other books I've read by the boys, especially Riptide, Ice Limit and Brimstone. Nevertheless, don't let the narration put you off this story; it's still a very good yarn.

Politics

Enjoying the Pendergast series. I am disappointed after reading a review on a later book regarding the inclusion of the author’s political interpretation of a party he is not affiliated. I read for escape and do not appreciate the perpetuation of hate and division that it fuels.
