Publisher's summary

Relic, a Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child thriller that introduces FBI Special Agent Pendergast

Just days before a massive exhibition opens at the popular New York Museum of Natural History, visitors are being savagely murdered in the museum's dark hallways and secret rooms. Autopsies indicate that the killer cannot be human....

But the museum's directors plan to go ahead with a big bash to celebrate the new exhibition, in spite of the murders.

Museum researcher Margo Green must find out who - or what - is doing the killing. But can she do it in time to stop the massacre?

Prolong the suspense: listen to the sequel, Reliquary.

Critic reviews

"With its close-up view of museum life and politics, plausible scientific background, sharply drawn characters and a plot line that's blissfully free of gratuitous romance, this well-crafted novel offers first-rate thrills and chills." ( Publishers Weekly)
"Wildly cool....Thrill hounds couldn't ask for a creepier environment....a thriller staged in the world's scariest building, with no room for the squeamish." ( Kirkus Reviews)

Excellent Listen!

This was undoubtedly an excellent listen. I have followed all the books for FBI Pendergast, and I was thrilled to see finally we have the beginning of all of the characters introduced in the later of the series. The characters are well developed and this book definetely kept me interested all the way to the epilogue... Cant wait to download Book 2.

Pretty Good

The book doesn't really pick up until the second half, but when it gets rolling it's hard to stop listening. I immediately started listening to the second book in the "Pendergast series", The Reliquary, on the strength of Agent Pendergasts portrayal in, The Relic.

My main complaint is that the narrator's voicing of some characters, for example the scotsman, is annoyingly cliche. Also, some descriptions of technology circa 1996 are a tad overdone in the style of the movie "Hackers".

Finally, let me just say that there is a great payoff in the last few chapters and epilogue. I highly recommend listening all the way through this book.

Not as good as rest of Pendergast series

I was very glad when Audible offered this title as I've greatly enjoyed the rest of the series. While the story is good and captivating, it's not quite as good as the others in the Pendergast series. My biggest complaint, though is the narration. I've found the "special" effects added to the voices annoying and distracting -- the tunnel voice, the telephone voice, the intercom voice, the thinking to yourself voice. The voice being used for a specific character also abruptly changed on a couple of occasions. Overall, I'd give the story 3.5 stars and the narration 2 stars.

The most awesome books ever!!

OMG I'm going to be so sad when I finish book 15 and have to wait for book 16 to come out,and hopefully it does and soon!!.. I read Relic many years ago in paper back,I remember it as a really good book,it stuck in my memory as all really good books do for me...So when I joined Audibles and ran across Relic I decided to get it.What I didn't realize when I decided to listen to it is I had no idea there were 2 other books relating to Relic, book 2 Reliquary" and book 3 "Cabinet of Curiosities" plus many other books with the awesome character of Special Agent Pendergast, I was elated to put it mildly!! lol. I'm on book 8 at the moment, I couldn't tell you how many times I've stayed up all night saying to myself, "just one more chapter, just one more chapter" over and over and end up staying up all night because I just couldn't stop listening to these books! I do though recommend listening to them in order, although you can if you want to listen to them out of order as each book is a stand alone story. But many of the main characters in each book carry over to the next book and new story line..To get the most out of the books and to really understand the characters and who they are than I recommend listening to them in order beginning with book 1 "Relic". These books are well worth your time, keeping in mind they are stories meant to entertain with twist and turns that make you go GASP!! lol It doesn't matter if they are plots and story lines that's not apt to happen in real life, they are meant to entertain, and they certainly do the job of keeping you on the edge of your seat, drawing you right into the story and make you feel like your part of the story and know each of the characters personally. At the ending of each book your begging for the next book, Preston&Childs are awesome writers!! I give my rating in "Overall, Performance. and Story" all 5 Stars and if there were more options for Stars I'd give MORE stars. I'm on my 8th book and it will also get all 5 stars..I'm going to be upset when I finish book 15,hopefully by the time I start book 15 book 16 will be out and maybe book 17,I'm keeping my hopes up and fingers crossed!!

A little over the top

A little too "monster lost in new york" for my taste. But the narrator was great and the main character was likeable.

long

Too much science which made the story drag. I enjoyed the plot and the humor.

not bad

Not bad, but saw the movie on tv recently. it's from the mid 80's and the book reminds me of that era also.

EEK!

Draws you in like a vacuum. Don't read it if you have to sleep or have to meet somebody. It won't happen. Enjoyed it thoroughly but the last few pages got a bit predictable after it was all resolved.
