About this listen

While her parents attend a work party, eighteen-year-old Ella Romero is left in charge of her two siblings—thirteen-year-old Nicholas and eight-year-old Arianna—at their secluded lake house. In her usual fashion, Ella invites her friends to hang out while her parents are away, too. It was supposed to be an easy, quiet, normal night.

But then a grizzled stranger arrives at the home. Although no one answers the front door, he knocks and talks, knocks and talks—knocks and talks. Not before long, the man’s bizarre, nonsensical ramblings turn into nasty threats.

He wants to get inside the house. He believes he’s meant to be with Ella. And he won’t let anything or anyone stop him from fulfilling his ‘destiny.’

Jon Athan, the author of Blender Babies and The Groomer, brings you a white-knuckle, high-tension, “one-shot” home invasion novel. Don't forget to lock your doors before reading...

this was one of the best books I have ever listened to. I am a splatterpunk pro. the more graphic and brutal the better. this author is one of my favorites, with that said, I think he put did himself. I have a strong stomach and love sick, twisted, and grotesque abuse in a horror novel, but this... this really got me (in a good way). what a gut punch! someone said this was similar to aron beauregards writing, and their right. but he is one of my favorite authors so do with that what you will!

Brutal and gripping

Not really surprised, his narrators are always terrible, that’s really the only problem I had besides how it ended

Hated the ending!

This book has a tired premise, reminiscent of every slasher movie from the exploitation era of the late ‘70’s and early ‘80’s. Not that this is a bad thing, as many a frightful film came out in that period. But if you’re expecting a refreshing, original novel this might not be the best choice.
The characters play out well, but that should always be expected in a Jon Athan novel. He has written some of the best splatter punk/extreme horror books over the last few years. Unfortunately, this isn’t one of them.
The narration was on point and never slacked off,
The biggest problem with this book is that the violence felt like something out of an Aron Beauregard novel, Jon is usually more reliable in his depictions of depravity. I would recommend one of his other novels first, before venturing into this book. If you like his style, as I do, you will still enjoy the novel, as I did. It is just not one of his best. Still worthy of more stars than any Beauregard work, though.

Brutally gruesome home invasion

I listened to half this book with my hand over my mouth. The narration was spectacular. The writing is brutally brilliant! I couldn’t get enough! This will frustrate you, disgust you, and break your heart.

WTF beginning to end

the story was good if a little predictable but definitely a thriller. the naration was in my opinion over the top. the attempt at child and female voices actually got irritating and could be tones way down but the story itself was great.

crazy is an understatement

Well that's none of your darn business! I remember being left at home alone as a kid with my siblings. We were never scared and we grew up watching horror movies at a young age. This story was one for the young uns these days. I feel this is something I need to let my kids read as a good parent.

Wow, Beau Thomas’s narration is *chef’s kiss*. His interpretation of The Intruder is chilling. I listened to the whole book in one day.

Be prepared for horrifically described scenes and jaw dropping moments. I wasn’t a fan of the ending, it left me wanting to know more but overall I enjoyed this read. Could see it being a movie.

Horrific story
