About this listen

Stunning views across the Grand Canal and a hotel suite fit for royalty… Lady Eleanor Swift is having a jolly good time on her Italian vacation, until a gondola ride is cut murderously short!

1924. Lady Eleanor Swift has been on a grand tour around Italy for a month with her butler Clifford. Finally arriving in Venice, she’s thrilled to be attending the famous carnival: all that’s needed is the perfect bejewelled costume for her faithful bulldog, Gladstone. But on her first gondola ride to take in the sights, a passenger collapses into the canal with a knife sticking out of his back.

Eleanor saw an argument break out between the gondolier and the victim, Councillor Benetto Vendelini, and it turns out they're rivals from the city's two great families. Vendelini’s murder is sure to reignite their centuries-long feud. While attending a glitzy ball that night, Eleanor learns of a plot to steal a precious family heirloom from the Vendelini household. Is the stolen item the key to solving this baffling murder?

In this floating city of tiny winding alleyways, Eleanor traces the missing heirloom to an antiques dealer in a far-flung corner of town. But when her handbag is snatched by a cloaked thief, she realises the murderer is dangerously close. Can Eleanor unmask this most cunning of killers, before she joins the other victim at the bottom of the Grand Canal?

An utterly gripping historical murder mystery set in Italy, full of intrigue and charming characters. Fans of T.E. Kinsey, Agatha Christie and Catherine Coles will be totally hooked by A Death in Venice!

Disguised

The way the plot twists and turns. Like Mardi Gras itself, it was masked all the way to the end!

Outstanding Series

I feel like I've known Eleanor and Clifford for YEARS!! The writing is outstanding, the stories are intriguing, and the characters are so much fun. Ms. Cass brings these characters to life in a way few narrators are able to do. This duo hits the jackpot every time.

Love and Murder in Venice

Lady Eleanor Swift and Clifford escape away to Venice on Holiday only to be followed by Murder! and the tug of Heart strings. Another wonderful and suspenseful adventure with Lady Swift and Clifford as they engage in a deadly game of mousetrap in Venice, Italy! As usual, the narration by Karen Cass is absolutely engaging and immersive.

Lady Swift books provide enjoyable light reading.

I do enjoy reading Lady Swift mysteries. However, this author like many female authors, whose genre is mysteries with female sleuths have for me, one very large and irritating habit of presenting their heroine as continuously biting her lip! No one intentionally bites one's lip. I know from experience because I have an overbite and without intention causes me to bite my lip. It's very painful! The other irritating habit Lady Swift has is how she regularly addresses her butler, Clifford. I accept they are terms of endearment, but they're out place and time. Otherwise, "A Death in Venice" is a well put together mystery. She provided clues upon which I could follow and determine who was the murderer and why. I definitely do recommend this book, but gave it 4 stars for the reasons I stated above.
