About this listen

What's a bright young lady to do when her brother becomes the main suspect in a murder? Why, solve the case of course.

England. 1923. After a year away at finishing school where she learned etiquette, deportment, and the difference between a fish fork and a salad one, Kitty Worthington is eager to return home. But minutes after she and her brother Ned board the Golden Arrow, the unthinkable happens. A woman with a mysterious connection to her brother is poisoned, and the murderer can only be someone aboard the train.

When Scotland Yard hones on Ned as the main suspect, Kitty sets out to investigate. Not an easy thing to do while juggling the demands of her debut season and a mother intent on finding a suitable, aristocratic husband for her.

With the aid of her maid, two noble beaus, and a flatulent Basset Hound named Sir Winston, Kitty treads a fearless path through the glamorous world of high society and London's dark underbelly to find the murderer. For if she fails, the insufferable Inspector Crawford will most surely hang a noose around her brother's neck.

Fun Listen with Great Characters

Loved the tenacity of the main character. The reader had no Idea who the guilty was or were until the end.

Perfect Cozy Mystery

I truly enjoyed this cozy mystery. I was looking for some thing a little light and fun and this hit the spot. Story was well put together!
I will have to say that the narration was excellent, however, just a tad to exuberant for me. That isn’t a complaint it almost didn’t fit the bill, but it’s such a minuscule adjustment that I would make that I do feel petty even mentioning it…. But here I am, being petty! 😂 If the narrator is reading this, you are outstanding, and it’s me not you.
Buying the next book now and can’t wait to listen!

Suspension of disbelief required

Generally witty and clever, but I could not understand why all the suspects were so willing to tell their stories to Kitty simply for the asking. She decries some of the gossip-minded characters, yet she’s the first one to invite it and listen, savoring any juicy morsel. Kitty’s personality was feisty and independent in the beginning, but by the end it escalated to willful, spoiled, immature determination and lost its charm. The narrator did a good job for the most part, infusing every word with spunk and energy, but since the story is told by Kitty, perhaps more nuance at times would have made her character more real and believable.

Fun, light cozy

The narrator took some getting used to. She did good voices of the other characters but she was always just so darned excited when reading the protagonist. I just wanted her to take a breath and relax a bit. Please note, i got this book for free, so I hung in until the end and was glad I did.

The descriptions

enjoyed the description of English life and period enlightenment. This was a book that would play to a ladies read. To much things described of ladies ware. Having said that a good mystery.

Surprisingly good!

Charming main character, she really grew on me. I’m a big fan of a clever 20s mystery.

The performer killed it for me. And not in a good way.

I think the storyline was probably good, but the narrator was so punchy and exuberant that it ruined the book for me, she seemed to want to drive home, every word, and it just didn’t fit the feel of a mystery. I found myself enjoying some of the writing and character, but the narrator is so unenjoyable for me that I don’t want to continue with the series. I’m sad because I really love mystery series with strong, female character leads set in the 20s.

A fun cozy romp

As a fan of both cozy mysteries and period books, I thoroughly enjoyed this. The plot was creative and kept me guessing, the characters were interesting, and the 1920s setting made it especially fun. The wealth of the heroine's family made some things a bit too convenient, but it didn't distract from my enjoyment.

The narrator is quite good, but she mispronounced several words. Several other words were not the correct ones for the context--either the narrator misread or the author chose a word that was close to what she was after but not quite the right one in these situations. Either way, an editor should have caught these things, along with several grammatical errors. These were minor distractions, but they did grate on my ears a bit.

Without leaving any plot loose ends, the author planted a few intriguing hints about the future of the characters. I'll definitely go on with the series.
