For over a week in a whaleboat with limited supplies of food and water, the castaways hope for rescue from a passing ship. Goldilocks, White Bear and Thomas are three characters on a quest to obtain a real mouth for White Bear who, without a real mouth, can only communicate by gestures or facial expressions. Once they reach the Dark Forest and meet Ozimund, they find out what they must do to complete the quest. By returning each of the items to the environment in which they found or received it, the quest ends with White Bear getting his real mouth.

The stories I told to my son Thomas at bedtime were similar to the stories in this book. His companions on these fictional journeys were White Bear and Goldilocks. Some of the elements in the stories are what he wanted to hear and including them seemed to be the right thing to do.
