Écrite en 1879, Boule de Suif est la nouvelle qui a imposé Guy de Maupassant comme un maître. L'action se situe durant la guerre de 1870 : dix personnes fuient Rouen, occupée par les soldats prussiens, pour gagner Dieppe en diligence. Parmi ces dix personnes, se trouvent des bourgeois, des commerçants, des nobles, et une prostituée, surnommée Boule de Suif, à cause de son embonpoint.

Escritor francés, Henry Réne Guy de Maupassant nació en Dieppe, Francia, el 5 de agosto de 1850 y falleció en París el 6 de julio de 1893. Se formó literariamente con el escritor Gustave Flaubert y participó desde joven en su círculo literario. Se especializó en la narrativa breve, llegando a publicar más de doscientos cuentos a lo largo de su vida, de entre los cuales destacan Bola de sebo y El Horla.

Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant was born on August 5th, 1850 near Dieppe in France. Maupassant’s early life was badly torn when at age 11 (his younger brother Hervé was then five) his mother, Laure, a headstrong and independent-minded woman, risked social disgrace in order to obtain a legal separation from her husband. After the separation, Laure kept custody of her two boys. With the father now forcibly absent, Laure became the most influential and important figure in the young boy's life.
