Hero and Leander is a Greek myth concerning the tragic story of two lovers. One was a priestess of Aphrodite who lived in a tower in Sestos, and the other a young man from Abydos on the opposite side of the strait. Leander fell in love with Hero and would swim every night across the Hellespont to spend time with her, with Hero's lamp at the top of her tower as his guiding light, and they shared a warm summer of love.

This lyrical ballad is one of Tennyson's most famous poems. The subject, the tragic passing of a reclusive noblewoman, was suggested by a 13th-century Italian romance, the Donna di Scalotta.

"Love lieth deep; love dwells not in lip-depths." In this tender and tragic idyll, the innocent Elaine of Astolat falls deeply in love with Sir Lancelot, who cannot return her feelings. Bound by his love for Queen Guinevere, Lancelot's heart is unreachable, and Elaine's devotion leads her to a sorrowful fate; a poignant tale of unrequited love, honour, and heartbreak in the shadow of Camelot.

This collection of sixteen poems features several notable examples of his early work, including “Oenone” and “The May Queen”, as well as two of his most iconic works, “The Lady of Shalott” and “The Lotus Eaters."

This evocative poem was first published in 1832 but republished in 1842 with extensive alterations.

"Make me a little happier: let me know it: Owe you me nothing for a life half-lost?" This Idyll continues the story of Geraint and Enid from Book 3. Geraint suspects that Enid no longer loves him, though she has done nothing to deserve his doubt. Without explaining himself, he asks her to ride with him on a long and dangerous journey, during which he forbids her to speak to him. Though hurt and confused, Enid obeys, warning him of danger along the way and helping him in silence, even as he risks his life again and again.

"Pelleas could only stare. Is Guinevere herself so beautiful? he wondered. The lady's violet eyes were wide and luminous; her skin seemed lit by a dawn from some unclouded heaven. Her limbs bore the grace of full womanhood, and yet her form was slender and her hand delicate. She might have seemed no more than a lovely plaything, but those eyes, deep and mocking, hinted at something sharper." "And the new sun rose bringing the new year." This is the last book in the Idylls in Prose series. It tells of Arthur's betrayal by Modred and his last last battle. This concluding section doesn't merely recount Arthur's death; it explores the profound impact of his passing on his kingdom and the enduring legacy of his ideals. It is a profound meditation on mortality, loss, and the cyclical nature of time, ending on a note of optimism with a new dawn.

Over the far horizon the blanket of night begins to slowly dissolve. The sun is once more on its daily journey across the heavens. The light begins to sharpen and increase in intensity, revealing the landscape. Morning has begun, and dazed heads and sleepy faces come to terms with the new day. In the 28 poems of which Maud: A Monodrama consists, a somewhat mentally fragile young man narrates step by step (almost in stream-of-consciousness) the progress and aftermath of his feelings for Maud, whose father, the owner of the neighboring estate and Hall, he blames for his own father's death and his family's ruin. Many of the themes of the work are related to Tennyson's own experiences and those of his close family.

"Locksley Hall" is a dramatic monologue written in 1835 and published in 1842. Tennyson explained that the poem was not autobiographical but purely imaginary, "representing young life, its good side, its deficiences and its yearnings".

The office of Poet Laureate goes back many centuries - informally to the time of Geoffrey Chaucer in 1389 and followed thereafter by a number of ‘volunteer laureates’. It was formally assigned to Ben Jonson in 1617 and, as a Royal office by letters patent in 1670, to John Dryden. Much of Tennyson's poetry is elegiac in nature, featuring characters who have been disempowered by isolation, age, or lack of opportunity. One of the most famous examples of this is the dramatic soliloquy, "Ulysses". "Columbus", written many years later, is also a dramatic narrative. In both cases, the narrators are elderly mariners, who have a long history of daring forays into remote regions, and who are eager to venture forth again but are hampered by lack of opportunity and the effects of aging.

Many countries now have a laureate, as do many societies and organisations. But perhaps ranked first among them all is that of our own Poet Laureate. Unfortunately no single authentic definitive record exists of the office of Poet Laureate of England. In some form it can be traced back to 1189 and Richard Canonicus, who was employed by Richard I with the title 'versificator Regis'.
