  • The Enduring Spirit of Adventure: Steve Griffith and the Rough-Stuff Fellowship
    Oct 14 2024

The Rough-Stuff Fellowship, founded in 1955, is the oldest off-road club in England. It was born out of a desire to escape the crowded roads and enjoy the peace and quiet of nature. The club initially focused on touring bikes and exploring challenging routes. In 1958, members embarked on an expedition across Iceland, which captured people's imagination. As mountain biking gained popularity, the Rough-Stuff Fellowship adapted to the new reality, embracing the benefits of off-road bikes. The fellowship values self-sufficiency and the ability to fix problems on the go. The spirit of adventure and exploration remains at the core of the fellowship. The conversation with Steve from the Rough-Stuff Fellowship revealed several key themes. One theme is the importance of being prepared for adventure cycling, including carrying essential tools and equipment. Another theme is the helpfulness and camaraderie of fellow cyclists, who are often willing to assist in times of need. The conversation also touched on the influence of the Rough-Stuff Fellowship on the culture of bikepacking and off-road adventures, as well as the use of technology like GPS and social media in modern cycling. Success for the Rough-Stuff Fellowship is defined as sharing knowledge and inspiring new members to explore and enjoy off-road cycling.
