About this listen

Living and slaving in Fill City One, you get used to the smell. We call it the Everpresent Stink. But every once in a while, on a spring day with a breeze, it clears away enough to remind us that there is something more out there. Most Fillers' wildest dreams would be just to get past the walls and live in the mainland. But my dream? It’s a little bigger.

I’m going to Mars.

Well, I’m only going to Mars if I can find a winning Red Scarab to get on Zach Larson’s crazy reality show. And then I’ll have to figure out how to escape this hellhole. And then compete on live television for three months. And somehow win a spot on the crew of the very first manned mission to Mars. Oh, and one more slight obstacle? There might be a reason that by 2085 a human still hasn’t set foot on the Red Planet. A dangerous reason. A reason worth killing for.

In You’re Going to Mars! Rob Dircks, Audible best-selling author of Where the Hell Is Tesla?, creates a near-future filled with family (the good kind and the insufferable kind), pop divas, mobsters, and the world’s first trillionaire - and sends them all on a science fiction odyssey/comedy/love story/adventure that will change their world forever.

Editorial Review

A light, rollicking sci-fi adventure

Rob Dirck’s Where the Hell is Tesla? has been something of a cult favorite among listeners for as long as I can remember, and Khristine Hvam is something of a legend in the realm of sci-fi and fantasy narrators, so unsurprisingly, author and narrator make for a winning combination in this fun Audible Original. If you’re new to the genre, this is a great entry ala Ready Player One—it’s light on the terminology, and big on the kind of fun, imaginative near-future worldbuilding that just effortlessly sweeps you away. But it also has romance, action, adventure, a quirky but loveable family story, and a heavy dose of humor. I wouldn’t call it exactly a family friendly listen, but if you’re hitting the road this holiday season as a couple or with some more mature, nerdily inclined listeners, I’d call this the perfect listen to keep spirits high through miles of travel—after all, at least you don’t have to escape all the way to Mars. —Sam D., Audible Editor

Get ready for a fun adventure to Mars (maybe....)!

4.5 stars
I really like how Rob Dircks has progressed with is novels. They just keep getting better. I feel like he’s matured into a seasoned author and knows how to produce an interesting novel and keep the reader interested the entire way through. The character development was nice and the future world he created feels somewhat realistic.

Initially, when I read a few brief reviews and saw some of the characters were named Paper, Rock, and Scissors, I thought this was going to be another silly, slapstick type of book. It definitely was not. It was more than that, in a good way.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It wasn’t too long, it was interesting, it was fun, the characters were great, and had just the right amount of humor.

Some stray thoughts/suggestions for the author: in some of Rob Dircks’s prior novels, some of the reviews complain about too much unnecessary swearing. While that does not bother me, I did notice this book had much reduced swearing. I understand that this is not a young adult book, but it seems like it could possibly reach a wider audience if potentially branded as “New Adult” (or maybe even “Young Adult”) if the swearing was toned down even more. Mainly since there are minimal adult relations and other such topics that don’t fit in young adult type novels. Anyways, I like it how it is but those are just my thoughts.

Audiobook narrator Khristine Hvam rating: 4 stars
The narrator is great. She changes her voice well for most characters, has actual sound effects, and sings. I wish she had just a bit more variation for the other characters, maybe mostly the female ones.

Hits it out of the park again!

At first I thought I'd miss hearing the author narrating the book like his other ones, but a few minutes in and I didn't give it another thought. The narrator here did a great job with Paper's character, and I really enjoyed her accents with the other characters, too. And Rob Dirck's humor and heart still came through as in his other books. His use of scientific details grounded this incredibly inventive plot of a young woman's journey in a world both similar and very different from ours. This was my first Audible Original and wow, just wow.

Easy to enjoy, light summer read. Characters were interesting and well written. I would buy book 2 if ever written although not needed because story concluded fully!

Different than the prior books, but enjoyable.

Different than Dirks prior books, but as usual, a good story. it started off slowly, but made up for it in the end. It's not great literature, parts are goofy, much is predictable, but it's still a fun story. I would recommend his other books over this, but if you've read them all, get this. Be patient and you will, I hope, be happy you listened.

Rocket girl named Paper?

Awesome, super fun, super smart heroine FTW! I really had no idea what to expect when I took Audibles sci-fi quiz. I was hesitant when ‘You’re Going to Mars’ was selected as my recommended book. After all I did not know the author. However, i am familiar with the narrator. Anyway, from start to finish this book was extremely enjoyable and well written There were lots of amazing characters. Lots of humor, life threatening action, mobsters, a few games and a sprinkle of romance. For all the super geeks, there are even mini physics, chemistry, astronomy, thermodynamics and other super geeky lessons thrown for free. The result, an amazing sci-if action packed thrill ride to Mars. Highly addictive, well worth the credit.

Fantastic

This is a complete, stand alone story..... 👍

Loved it..... It was a wonderful story combining elements of TV entertainment we love to hate with witty interplay and at times emotionally touching interaction. It's not often l finish a book so quickly and am disappointed there is no sequel.

This book is why l listen to audiobooks, every now and then, one book is special to the reader, this is one of the special one's.

The narrator was fantastic as well.
