Editorial reviews

Editors Select, October 2014 - Following in the footsteps of best friend, former SNL cast mate, and improv partner Tina Fey, Amy Poehler is releasing her first book – and I couldn't be more excited! The much anticipated Yes Please could not come any sooner for me after completing Tina Fey's Bossypants, Mindy Kaling's Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, and Nick Offerman's Paddle Your Own Canoe - each of which praises Poehler for her witty, charming, and brazen attitude. With an ensemble cast of excellent narrators joining her (Seth Meyers, Carol Burnett, and Patrick Stewart, to name a few), this book is shaping up to be yet another hit for the hilarious Amy Poehler. I can’t wait to listen! Rob, Audible Editor

Critic reviews

"Actress and comedian Amy Poehler's memoir is full of charm and life lessons, but what's REALLY fun is how out of the box the audiobook production is. Listeners know they're getting something special, unique, and a bit absurd right from the start when Poehler claims to be narrating from her own personal audio booth, built at the base of Mt. Rushmore. Poehler sounds consistently warm, funny, and genuine, and it's only a matter of time before she'll have you laughing out loud. When she's joined in "her" studio by Seth Meyers and Mike Schur to reminisce about Saturday Night Live and Parks and Recreation, it sounds like we're overhearing candid (and giggly) conversations between friends. Cameos from Carol Burnett, Kathleen Turner, Patrick Stewart (intoning strange haikus), and even Amy's parents add even more flavor. What a treat." ( AudioFile)

Listen instead of read!

Would you consider the audio edition of Yes Please to be better than the print version?

While the print version is extremely charming, with some wonderful vintage Amy pictures and a very engaging arrangement, I think that this book shines in audio format. Amy is an actor and comedienne by trade, and her moments of self-reflection and self- deprecation have much more impact when read by her, with her personal inflection. The audiobook made me laugh out loud, and I'm not sure the print book would have been able to do that.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked how Amy included an even mix of reflection, humor and serious story. I wasn't looking for a heavy autobiography that detailed every aspect of Amy's life; I wasn't looking for an emotional outpouring about her divorce. This book was what I expected: entertaining, enlightening, and engaging.

Which scene was your favorite?

"Sorry sorry sorry" was so extremely moving. It was humbling and powerful to hear a huge celebrity like Amy reflect on a time that she didn't do the right thing, and to hear and see how that wrong choice effected her. She is wonderfully self reflective; she doesn't bullshit us and make excuses, she says "I was wrong and my pride got in the way". It made me admire her more.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed out loud many times, and the above story, "Sorry sorry sorry", along with other stories where Amy shared her insight about the world or herself, really made me reflect on myself and think about the ways I could be better and do better.

Hmmm: Still Deciding.

I really enjoyed listening to this audio book, and I can't imagine how it is as a print book, because various people come in and read parts of it (Amy's parents are wonderful!) and she bursts out laughing or uses funny accents in other parts. It's thought-provoking and interesting, but a little weird for me because though I know of Amy's work with Parks and Rec and a little of it with SNL, I don't know it well, and I mostly picked up this book because of her website "Amy Poehler's Smart Girls" on Facebook. It is funny in places, serious in others, and interesting overall, bringing me into a life I neither knew much about nor wanted to live.

So, I highly enjoyed it, but I'm not really sure what its overall effect was. I WILL say that I didn't like having the last chapter read aloud to an audience, because the laugh track/audience was wayyyyyy too intrusive and annoying: a few people laughed at everything: she cleared her throat (gales of laughter). . etc. But, overall, interesting.

Yes, definitely!

I loved this book and audio book. Amy is honest and hard on herself. My favorite parts are listening to her talk about her kids and friends and explaining how shes not afraid to say "no".

for moms

I am child free and found a large portion of this book not to be for me. But I love Amy, I love Smart Girls, and SNL, Parks and Recreation, and so much more that Amy as been a part of. Some of this book is very personal and not very funy just like our own lives. There were times where I struggled to finish and put the book down and didn't come back for a long time. But I did finish and I am glad I did. As a whole this book is entertaining and a wee bit educational. You will learn about relationships, divorces, parenting, and "show business." If that is what you came for you will be hooked on this audiobook.

When reading an autobiography, listen to the author

It is a better reading experience because they know exactly how to read it.

Surprisingly, I bookmarked many quotes from her book. I didn't expect much from her but knowing it is generally loved by most readers, I had an idea that there is a chance that I might like it too. And I did, I do. Her voice was consistent the entire time, she didn't get loud and I didn't get annoyed listening to her. Sometimes, listening to an author irritates me after a while, they just begin to sound "too much" but not Amy.

I also agree when they say that her book is a good read when you are in your late 20s. She talks about her life in college, her many jobs, her personal life that are mostly young and new adults could relate with. These events in her life may happen to anyone who's at this similar stage in their lives. It's like listening to your own past, almost your same present and a future that some may likely share the similarities with hers.

I recommend her book to ladies everywhere, especially to women who are part of the workforce. You will like it and you will definitely enjoy it.

A Delight!

Entertaining and kwerky, much like the author. I wold liken listening to it to hanging out with Miss Knope, only about acting and improv.

Amazing!

Would you consider the audio edition of Yes Please to be better than the print version?

Yes! The content is wonderful either way, but the guest voices in the audiobook are amazing.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Amy, of course...? She's wonderful, relatable, hilarious, and strong.

What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I loved hearing Amy and her friends read this book. They all did a wonderful job (maybe the best I've heard!).

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Hearing about how Amy is willing to give you a laugh when you need it most, hearing Seth Meyers read his chapter about how much Amy means to him as a friend, hearing about her time at SNL, hearing her talk about the self-conscious, self-hating voice that's hiding somewhere in all of our minds.

Any additional comments?

This book was absolutely wonderful. It may be my favorite. I'm so glad I listened.
